The Best Nail Clippers,
By
This review is from: Safari Professional Pet Nail Trimmer, Small/Medium (Misc.)
I've worked with dogs for years and as a result am very particular about nail clippers. Not only are these clippers comfortable to use but they can get into tight spaces and give you more control. On top of that they give you a nice clean cut.

Very easy to use, keeps us from cutting the quick; cutting puppy nails is now painless for both him and us. Seems to be a good value as I've looked around at local stores.

One of my dogs has this weird nail that doesn't contact the pavement when she walks. It was actually growing into a curl and she wouldn't let me file it off. I needed something that would be quick and painless. These trimmers did the job.

My poor old spaniel is getting up there in years. Blind as a bat, going deaf, and his hips are giving out. All he has left is his appetite and tummy rubs. Taking him to the groomer is stressful for him--and sheer anguish for me. I can't shave his fur in the summer, but I can spare him the visits just for nail trimming...now that I've discovered the Safari Professional Pet Nail Trimmer. The clippers are surprisingly easy to use, the cut is clean and precise, and you don't need tremendous pressure to cut straight through. I was afraid of hitting the dreaded quick and making my little guy bleed, but a quick check on Google for nail cutting tips (and simple but excellent instructions on the packaging of these clippers) made that a non-problem too. Just look at the underside of the dog's nail. Even on blackest nails, you can see the pinker or lighter part of the nail, which is the quick. Place the clippers a bit above that (in the direction away from the foot pad) and you're fine. My first time clipping Stanley nails was a cinch. And believe me, this dog has feet the size of saucers and nails to match. Thick as pinky fingers. I waited until Stanley was sleeping (he has never been a dog with lightening like reflexes...even as a youngster, people always thought he was dead when he was merely resting), took a paw, checked to see where the "quick" ended and 'snip' -- that fast, that simple. About halfway through the pedicure he woke up, but not sensing any food in the immediate area, dozed back off again so I could complete the job. My niece has a little poodle who is also pushing the envelope in terms of age. However, her dog doesn't have my Stanley's sweet disposition and is on the No Fly List at most of the groomers in town. She asked me if I'd do the dog's nails for her. I guess she figured I'm older and have less to live for. Anyway, we got a big pile of treats ready. My niece kept tossing them into the dog's mouth, distracting her, while I went to work on the nails. This is the same trick my manicurist uses with me and it worked equally well with the dog. If you've been considering trimming your dog's nails yourself, these are a very good tool. Dogs'nails grow very quickly; they need frequent trimming. The nails are connected to the leg bones and when they get too long, can jar the animal and make walking uncomfortable--particular in dogs with hip problems and/or arthritis and other joint issues. These affordable clippers cost about what a single nail clipping does at the groomers, so it's money well spent.

I use these clippers on my cat and they do the job well. The guard on the back is reassuring as it prevents you from cutting the nails back too far. However, because my cat is still a kitten, even if I cut to the guard it would still be too far. But regardless, the clippers are very sturdy and work really well. I am very pleased.

Our new clippers arrived today, and we tried them out immediately with great success. The stop guard on the clippers is a great feature that keeps you from cutting too short and also takes away a lot of the stress from the chore. I used to be very timid with our old trimmers, afraid to hurt my puppy. These clippers were very sharp and cut through the nail cleanly. No flinching from me or my dog! Definitely recommended.

Works Very Well,

I work in an grooming salon, and I've used these clippers for about six months solid, doing at least 20 dogs/week. They've held up the whole time, and are still sharp enough to get a clean cut every time. They're nice and small/lightweight, so trimming small nails is easy, but they also open up surprisingly wide, allowing really big nails to fit inside. The guard is kind of annoying because every dog's nails are different and for some it wouldn't cut enough and for some it'd cut too much, but I just push it to the side and don't use it. I highly recommend these clippers for either home or professional use, and if you want the best success in trimming your dog's nails, I suggest giving him/her a bath first, then clipping the nails when they're still wet...it makes them much easier to shave down and avoids the crunching and crushing/splitting thing I've heard other people complain about.

I assume I'd like these more if my dog enjoyed getting his nails cut. I've used it on my dog, my moms, and my aunts. All three of them are idiots when cutting their nails. I feel like I had to use more force than I did using my old, cheapo clippers though. And It didn't cut as "Clean" as it was supposed to. And if I didn't press hard enough it sort of "ripped" the nail end off.I'm going to try these several more times. But they're no miracle, thats for sure.

I bought these for my dogs, in which I have 5 of them. This is standard size, but still works great for my greyhound and lab and smaller dog. Its sharp, and quick and I love the grip. Very glad I purchased this nail trimmer!!

These have a great feature that isn't listed in the product description. There is a metal plate that can slide out behind the clipping mechanism. The claw can be set against this plate and it regulates the amount of claw that gets clipped off. I'm brand new to claw trimming and was nervous about it because I'm a bit klutzy and this cat does not like having her paws messed with. But the guard plate makes it very quick and easy to know exactly how much you're trimming. The clippers are very sharp and cut the claws cleanly with very little effort on my part. |
