I am disappointed in this bracket. It can hold an AC unit, but it requires a lot of finagling. To keep the lower bracket from slipping down, I had to drill a hole in the lower pad and drive a screw in the wall. To get the AC unit to sit flat on the bracket, I had to cut a piece of the right thickness wood and insert it between the AC and bracket. By the time I got done messing with this thing, I might as well have built my own wooden bracket and saved my money.

This product says it is universal, but it is not. It only works well if your AC unit is completely flat on the bottom and if you have a certain type of wall that will keep the lower pad from slipping.

However, to be fair, two of these mounted under my one AC unit would have worked well. With the way the bottom of my AC unit was designed, one bracket placed in the center of the AC unit would not sit flat because of the protrusions under the AC unit. But the AC unit was flat on the two edges. I still would have to put screws in the lower pads, but would not have had to cut special wood shims. But this was all in hind sight since I ordered the AC and bracket at the same time and did not know what the bottom of the AC unit looked like. I assumed that "universal" meant what the product name said.

Although I'd say it would be difficult to make a truly universal support bracket, the item is strong, secure and best of all, it's engineered & assembled in USA. I have not checked, but I'd bet Home Depot's version is made in China.

I'd recommend measuring your AC unit and then finding the point of balance where the bracket will be most supportive. I did this by holding both sides of the AC unit and setting the unit on a straight arm of a wooden chair and finding the appropriate middle-balance point. I measured this distance and positioned the AC support arm in my window accordingly. My Frigidaire has the heavy compressor component situated to the left side, so I mounted the bracket 3 inches to the left of what would be center.

I recommend this item. You will most likely need to drill pilot holes for the 3 screws so you do not damage your wood. No one wants damaged wood.

I just installed this. My window is a replacement in a 100+ year old house. The layout is different from what the diagram suggested. My window has a 3/16" frame that sticks up in front of window and near the outer end so it doesn't have a smooth sill. I had to add more of a sill b/c the instructions say 4" minimum (take a star away from that). I added it on the outside using a treated 2x4. I then screwed that down in multiple place to my house. I then installed the shelf. My next issue was my aluminum siding. The bottom bar pushes against it. The siding is not flat so the top of the shelf would drop a little as the siding tilts. I got it into position but again another star taken away b/c this is not a truly universal product. The instructions are good. The concept is great, esp. for folks on a 2nd+ floor who can't easily access the window from the outside.

If you have ever used a window AC without a bracket like this you know how you constantly worry about the unit falling out the window whether while putting it in and adjusting it, or if someone opens the window after it it is installed. Many people comment on the "universal" claims being untrue though I found this to have more to do with the shape of the bottom of my AC units rather than with any product design. I did find that to get everything fitting tightly and properly angled I needed to use a piece of wood under the front of the AC on the window sill so it took a little effort, and the instructions take some experimentation to figure out but with patience I got an excellent result. I bought one heavy duty and one regular duty for 2 different AC's and found them both to be equally well made though it is worth noting that the heavy duty unit is a few inches longer and so sticks out beyond my 8,000 BTU unit farther than I would prefer for a good look.

I thought this was a large tray at first but it's only about 5" wide and around 21" long. It was easy to install and put together. I did it by myself without my husband helping me. I just followed the detailed instructions included in the package and got my drill and went at it. My AC unit was weighted on the left side so I had a bit of difficulty balancing the weights just right so that the plank carried most of it instead of the window, and it took me about 2 tries... then I just readjusted my AC a bit off center to balance it further. The AC was 67 lbs. so It was a bit of a struggle, but this made it so much easier to install. Great buy, just make sure you read the instructions.

I bought this item from Home Depot. Made in Abilene TX. I used two of them when in fact one is all you are supposed to need. It held an 18,000 BTU easily at 120 LBS. The levels built into it are very handy for getting the height to work for both at the same time. I would buy it again. A drill, drill bits, a wrench, and some screw drivers are a good idea for installation. I also cut a piece of wood with a skilsaw to fit to window stoop to add extra wood to the area. Total money was 40.00/EA plus tax so it came to 88.00 for two unless you order them online.

I have had this installation going for about a week and no failures of the supports. They also keep vibration down to the air conditioner.
