I have yet to hear it alarm so I am not sure if it is actually testing gas, but I am assuming it is working and I have no gas leak in my basement.

All we had to do was plug it in and it worked!

This is a nice and reasonably priced. I did test its ability to sense Natural gas and it does work fine. I purchased this to put in my Boiler room where all my natural gas lines are located. For most homes the 85db alarm same as almost all CO and fire detectors is not loud enough for a Natural gas sensor as I realized after install. The reason is that smoke and CO are and should be located near the bedrooms as well as other locations in your home. So CO and fire are both in your living space and 85db is plenty loud. Now a Natural gas/Propane sensor needs to be located near the potential source of the problem and generally remote to bedrooms and/or the main living space. If you want to know if 85db is loud enough for you let me offer this recommendation. Take one of your smoke alarms to the location you plan to mount this unit. Have someone stand in the bedroom area and use the test function on the smoke alarm and see if the sound is loud enough in the bedrooms. I need to research more but I believe devices of this type to be UL approved are limited to 85db to avoid hearing damage so unfortunately this unit may be as good as any and thus why I gave it 5 stars. I have not been able to find any such device that is louder so far. I decided it was still best to have such a device as I can hear it when the house is quiet so still affords some warning and protection, they trigger and alarm before an explosive level is reached. I recommend such a device but wanted all to know there is a limitation.

This is functional and reasonably priced. I tested it by leaving the LP stove on for a short while. Works with an ear-piercing beep.

Alarm is being used in an RV and appears to work very well. I removed the transformer and wired it direct to a 12 volt battery through a on/off switch. It is mounted approximately one foot above the floor.

In my propane-heated house I had previously used a combination carbon monoxide and explosive gas alarm, but it was rather finicky and tended to sound off for no apparent reason. I later read that combining these two functions was probably not a good idea, as the optimal placement of an alarm for the two gasses is different. As explained in the Safe-T-Alert instructions, for propane you want the alarm within 6 inches of the floor but carbon monoxide detectors want to be near the ceiling. Also, a CO detector shouldn't be near a combustion source (furnace, etc.) but you'd probably want a gas detector close to the appliance that uses the gas.

The Safe-T-Alert can detect both propane and natural gas, though for the latter a high mounting position is wanted since natural gas is lighter than air and tends to rise. This version has an attached line cord with AC adapter - the cord is fixed and comes out the bottom of the unit. Included in the package, though not mentioned in the instructions, is a clamp that can be affixed to a center outlet screw to hold the adapter in place. Two screws and plastic anchors are provided to mount the alarm. The alarm is said to draw 3.8W.

I have not yet tested detection, but pressing the test button makes the alarm sound a loud, piercing beep like most smoke alarms. I was a bit puzzled by the instructions saying that the status LED would be yellow during warm-up, but it flashed green instead, going solid green after a couple of minutes. The instructions are otherwise quite detailed about installation and use.

Before ordering, I contacted seller by phone, and I've never had a more pleasant customer service response. They were just great. I'm another one who is using it in an RV....connecting directly to 12v rather than using the included power supply. Much safer since it will not be affected by a power outage.

Our video on You Tube is entitled: "Defective Safe Alert Gas detector 40-411-P from Professional Equipment"

I do not recommend this product.

My brother installed this product 4' from the stove four months ago. It worked then when tested, but it didn't work when my mom left the stove on for about 3 hours a few weeks ago. My brother smelled the gas as soon as he stepped in the house. My parents were clueless watching TV. This is really scary.

You can see in the video that the unit is adequately powered but does not go off even when placed right next to the stove.

There is a one year warranty I can try to enact, however, I am not sure if I want a new unit that I don't trust and can't sell in good conscience. I've asked the seller, Professional Equipment if they can make an exception in their refund/return policy but still haven't gotten a definitive answer. I figure if they can stand behind and continue to sell this product then they can talk to the manufacturer directly.

I will write more if I hear back from someone or if I find another unit that works reliably.

Looks like a reliable quality product which detects natural gas without false alarms. Only bad parts is that it does not have back up battery in case you are out of electricity..but how often that happens....so it should be OK.

I bought this because I have a gas fireplace in the basement of our house that we use in the winter months and if for some reason the gas goes out while we are sleeping and then comes back on it would be free flowing while we are still asleep and we would never even know it. Plus the added bonus that if anything else leaked like the furnace, water heater, etc. this should do the job catching it. Hopefully we won't have to put this thing to the test but I have been feeling pretty uneasy since our last one went out. I'm glad to have a little piece of mind back.
