Book Description

March 1, 2009

We know their favorite spots to scratch. We know which funny noises make them cock their heads. We know what treats they love the best. But do we know how to keep our dogs safe? The truth is, we often don’t consider what hazards lurk in our home and garden until an incident occurs. Each year, thousands of dogs are seriously hurt and even killed by a host of easily preventable accidents. The Safe Dog Handbook teaches readers about the myriad ways to ensure a safe home and outdoor experience for their dogs. Full of practical information, this book is an essential guide for any dog owner.

About the Author

Melanie Monteiro began her journey into the world of canine safety in 2002, after adopting the world’s most thrill-seeking, accident-prone Labrador puppy, Taiga. Since then, she’s become a certified pet first aid instructor and canine safety lecturer to countless dog parents, canine professionals and humane organizations.

A dedicated dog lover, Melanie has been a puppy raiser for Canine Companions for Independence, a grooming crewmember for SPCA-LA, and volunteer for several other L.A. area rescue organizations. In her quest to help dogs lead safe, healthy lives, she has trained with the Emergency Care and Safety Institute, The American Red Cross and the Companion Animal Sciences Institute, where she earned a certificate in canine nutrition.

In her past life, Melanie was an award-winning advertising writer in Los Angeles. During her twenty-year career, she created campaigns for many national brands including PetSmart and Pedigree, which provided the foundation for her unique insight into the concerns of pet owners.

An L.A. native, Melanie currently lives in Sisters, Oregon, with her husband Mark, the infamous Labrador Taiga, and a constantly revolving guest roster of dogs.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Dog Info Book April 14, 2009
Format:Spiral-bound
This book is a gold mine of information for the care and safety of our beloved pooches. I got it thinking I would use it as a reference / first aid manual for my rambunctious terrier but the minute I opened it to "skim through it" I got hooked and read it cover to cover. Did you know grapes can cause kidney failure in some dogs? Or that the Sago Palm, very common in Southern California gardens, is lethal? A couple of nights ago I turned my back for a second and my dog gobbled up my pasta which was covered with a sauce made with huge chunks of garlic. I remembered seeing garlic on the list of toxic foods so I grabbed my book and turned to pg. 57 and to the most important list all dog owners should have taped on their refrigerator door. The information on separation anxiety (pg. 45) could have saved my dog years of 4th of July stress and if I had seen the safety tip about bolting out front doors earlier (pg. 23) I probably could have saved $5000 on expensive TPLO knee surgery recently. Beautifully written and designed and meticulously researched, this book should be mandatory reading for all dog owners. In fact, I think it should automatically come with all new puppies and rescues as an instruction manual!

5.0 out of 5 stars For dog owners this is a "Must Have Book" February 20, 2009
Format:Spiral-bound|Amazon Verified Purchase
Let me start off by saying that we are owners of a cage free dog boarding facility and have what I thought to be in depth knowledge of dogs. But, as the saying goes, "You don't know everything" couldn't be more true! The Safe Dog Handbook is loaded with information on not only how to keep your dog safe in the outdoors as well as indoor environments but great dog behavior tips as well. The book has an interesting design feature in that it has a spiral binder that allows for easy page access and long term durability. This book should be kept close by for quick reference in a dog emergency, it even comes with two handy bookmarks. I plan on keeping close by at our business and to make sure all our employees read it too. It is extremely well written and photographed and makes the perfect gift for any dog lover.
