5.0 out of 5 stars For dog owners this is a "Must Have Book"
Let me start off by saying that we are owners of a cage free dog boarding facility and have what I thought to be in depth knowledge of dogs. But, as the saying goes, "You don't know everything" couldn't be more true! The Safe Dog Handbook is loaded with information on not only how to keep your dog safe in the outdoors as well as indoor environments but great dog behavior...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a Home Vet Handbook - but helps you pre-plan for prevention
I have a very good vet home handbook already and wouldn't turn to this one for any first aid advice, but it was worth reading. It made me think of things that might be negative for my dogs that I didn't realize and had a helpful list of poisonous plants, and other toxins that are common around the house.

Let me start off by saying that we are owners of a cage free dog boarding facility and have what I thought to be in depth knowledge of dogs. But, as the saying goes, "You don't know everything" couldn't be more true! The Safe Dog Handbook is loaded with information on not only how to keep your dog safe in the outdoors as well as indoor environments but great dog behavior tips as well. The book has an interesting design feature in that it has a spiral binder that allows for easy page access and long term durability. This book should be kept close by for quick reference in a dog emergency, it even comes with two handy bookmarks. I plan on keeping close by at our business and to make sure all our employees read it too. It is extremely well written and photographed and makes the perfect gift for any dog lover.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Dog Info Book, April 14, 2009
This review is from: Safe Dog Handbook: A Complete Guide to Protecting Your Pooch, Indoors and Out (Spiral-bound)
This book is a gold mine of information for the care and safety of our beloved pooches. I got it thinking I would use it as a reference / first aid manual for my rambunctious terrier but the minute I opened it to "skim through it" I got hooked and read it cover to cover. Did you know grapes can cause kidney failure in some dogs? Or that the Sago Palm, very common in Southern California gardens, is lethal? A couple of nights ago I turned my back for a second and my dog gobbled up my pasta which was covered with a sauce made with huge chunks of garlic. I remembered seeing garlic on the list of toxic foods so I grabbed my book and turned to pg. 57 and to the most important list all dog owners should have taped on their refrigerator door. The information on separation anxiety (pg. 45) could have saved my dog years of 4th of July stress and if I had seen the safety tip about bolting out front doors earlier (pg. 23) I probably could have saved $5000 on expensive TPLO knee surgery recently. Beautifully written and designed and meticulously researched, this book should be mandatory reading for all dog owners. In fact, I think it should automatically come with all new puppies and rescues as an instruction manual!

This is well written, has everything you need to know (and stuff you didn't even know that you needed to know but you do), and really cute pics. I highly reco this book for anyone who loves dogs and wants to care for them as best they can. Very informative and very easy to read.

I would definitely recommend this book to others. If you are considering obtaining or have just gotten a pet, reading through this will prime you on most everything you need to know. Unfortunately, the two times I've been seriously concerned about my puppy's health, it was not covered in the book (he ended up being fine, though). The index could also be improved upon. I still recommend it highly to keep around, though. The spiral bound aspect is nice. Includes things like outdoor safety, choking, collar safety (often overlooked) and symptoms to watch out for. I keep it right on top of my dog's crate in a basket for quick reference, and I do reference it often. Remember it's ALWAYS best to call the vet if you have any concerns that are not obvious fixes!!! Also check out the author's you tube page which is helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for dog lovers, August 24, 2010

This review is from: Safe Dog Handbook: A Complete Guide to Protecting Your Pooch, Indoors and Out (Spiral-bound)
This book is informative and was extremely helpful in my landscaping decisions. I thought that the spirial binding was a tremendous help when I consulted the wealth of useful facts that protect dogs. As dog lovers, and foster parents to puppies from our local Humane shelter, the book has already saved one puppies health ( and possible its life) because of the poisonous plant tips. Prevention is so much better than reaction to a pet emergency that I donated several dozen books to our local Humane shelter to help new dog owners keep their pets safe. I think it is a must.

I heard about this book from the Ellen DeGeneres Show and I think it's a fantastic book that every dog owner should have. I'm especially glad for the pet first aid information but also like the lists of all the things that are poisonous for dogs, which I've already referred to twice! My Cavalier is already 1 yr. but still gets into things all the time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have book for dog owners., June 27, 2009

This review is from: Safe Dog Handbook: A Complete Guide to Protecting Your Pooch, Indoors and Out (Spiral-bound)
This is the perfect reference book for anyone who owns a dog or puppy and is concerned for their safety and well being. We have a young, very "busy" mixed-breed rescue who has a history of getting into things, and this book has given us some great information and tips on how to make sure her environment is safe, and how to be prepared to react to any type of emergency. I showed the toxic plant guide to my gardener and asked him to tell me if any of the plants in our yard were poisonous, and we wound up ripping out the foxgloves! The tips on separation anxiety were very helpful. And I love that the book has a spiral binding so you can lay it flat when you need it, like with the emergency first aid guide. There are also lots of adorable color photos. This book has everything, and it's beautiful enough to give as a nice gift to a friend or relative who brings home a new dog.
