Book Description

April 15, 2000
Beneath the quiet charm of Martha's Vineyard, trouble is brewing. A beautiful con woman has brought her latest scheme to the exclusive island community and is wreaking havoc with several lives. Talented local artist Holly Anderson has a vested interest in exposing this conniving vixen who brazenly seduced her father into a scandalous affair and a reckless game of theft, blackmail and possible murder. Then there's Sam Steadman, a man with a few secrets of his own. The darkly handsome photographer has come to the island to track down the thief who stole the only worthwhile possession his parents owned. Soon it's clear that Sam and Holly are after the same woman. As their lives and hearts collide, they've got to decide if they're enemies or allies, strangers...or something much, much more.

From Publishers Weekly

When Eden Walker--a gold-digging sociopath--seduces an older man, she wreaks havoc on a close-knit Martha's Vineyard family. Soon, the gentleman's daughter, Holly Anderson, is on her trail, and right behind her is Sam Steadman, Eden's long-deserted husband. He has his own reason to find his devious wife: he recently learned that Eden had scammed his needy parents. Holly and Sam intersect and clash, then reluctantly team up to track down the elusive Eden, who's now on the run from two fresh victims writing back their money. Though haunted by Eden's seductive spell, Sam falls for fey artist Holly and tries to hide that he's still technically married. Will they get together? Will Eden receive her deserved comeuppance? Stockenberg (Keepsake) concocts a complex, fast-moving plot--peopled with winning secondary characters--as well as a humorous and tender love story. (Apr.)

From Library Journal

Stunned and furious to discover that her father wants to divorce her mother for a woman half his age, folk artist Holly Anderson takes matters into her own hands and ends up joining forces with the woman's ex-husband, a photojournalist who is looking for her for an entirely different, but equally important, reason. A conniving con artist who leads everyone on a not-so-merry chase, a pair of artistic protagonists who fall in love in spite of themselves, an abundance of Martha's Vineyard charm, and an intriguing plot that is not so straightforward as it seems blend in this gently sensual story. Stockenberg (Keepsake) is a RITA Award-winning writer and lives in Massachusetts.

More About the Author

USA Today bestselling novelist Antoinette Stockenberg grew up wanting be a cowgirl and have her own horse (her great-grandfather bred horses for the carriage trade back in the old country), but the geography just didn't work out: there weren't many ranches in Chicago. Her other, more doable dream was to write books, and after stints as secretary, programmer, teacher, grad student, boatyard hand, office manager and magazine writer (in that order), she achieved that goal, writing over a dozen novels, several of them with paranormal elements. One of them is the RITA award-winning EMILY'S GHOST.

Stockenberg's books have been published in eleven languages and are often set in quaint New England harbor towns, always with a dose of humor. She writes about complex family relationships and the fallout that old, unearthed secrets can have on them. Sometimes there's an old murder. Sometimes there's an old ghost. Sometimes once-lovers find one another after half a lifetime apart.

Her work has been compared to writers as diverse as LaVyrle Spencer, Nora Roberts, and Mary Stewart by critics and authors alike, and her novels have appeared on bestseller lists in USA Today as well as the national bookstore chains. Her website features sample chapters, numerous reviews, and many photos. www.antoinettestockenberg.com

5.0 out of 5 stars A great talent in the romance genre, April 9, 2000
This review is from: Safe Harbor (Mass Market Paperback)
On Martha's Vineyard, accompanied by the beautiful Eden Walker, Eric Anderson sails away, leaving behind a distraught wife and two adult children. At about the same time, Sam Steadman's parents inform him that his estranged wife Eden has vanished after they gave her a valuable sixteenth century Durer engraving. Sam vows to regain what he believes was stolen from his naive parents. He traces Eden to the Anderson home where he meets Holly. Sam hides the truth from Holly, but tries to enlist her help.

When blood is found all over the Anderson yacht and Eden is missing, the police suspect Eric is a killer. However, Eden reappears and tries to get Sam to intercede with two vicious individuals chasing after her. Meanwhile, Sam and Holly fall in love. However, he knows that when she learns who he really is, their relationship could end. Holly still hurts from her father's betrayal and trust is critical to her.

Romance readers have quickly discovered how entertaining an Antoinette Stockenberg novel is as her books become KEEPSAKEs requiring A CHARMED PLACE to be kept. Her latest tale, SAFE HARBOR is a captivating contemporary romantic intrigue that centers on dysfunctional relationships. The story line is fun because the charcaters appear so real. Ms. Stockenberg has written another triumph that will thrill sub-genre fans.

Once again Stockenberg has produced an entertaining and suspenseful narrative. The conflict and secrets between Holly Anderson and Sam Steadman lend themselves to another absorbing story from the pen of this author. How the pitfalls are resolved make for an interesting tale. Those who have been to Martha's Vineyard where the scene is laid will easily be transported back to the island via the descriptive prose. A good summer read! Can't wait for her next book!
