What would you do to protect your family?

Financial advisor Pat Tierney’s world is shattered when a visitor to her office tells her that Pat's late husband is the father of a seven-year-old boy. Stunned by the revelation of her husband's affair, Pat is even more shocked when the woman bolts from the office, leaving young Tommy behind.

When Tommy's mother is murdered, police tell Pat that the boy may be the killer's next target. In a desperate race to protect Tommy, Pat searches for the truth and uncovers a deadly scheme involving illegal immigrants, trafficking in human body parts and money laundering.

And Pat discovers that she'll do just about anything to keep her family safe.

REVIEWS:

"McCracken’s first novel offers a coherent structure, an exact feel for the Toronto locales, and, in Pat, a hugely attractive sleuth figure." —Toronto Star

"With Safe Harbor, Rosemary McCracken proves why she's already won international acclaim. This is an absorbing page-turner you won't want to miss." —Rick Mofina, bestselling author of The Burning Edge

"Rosemary McCracken has a deft touch for writing believable relationships, especially among families. These particular characters will soon feel like people you know and don't want out of your life. Add to this an exciting plot and you'll be ready for a great read." —Maureen Jennings, author of the Detective William Murdoch mysteries

"The title of Rosemary McCracken's debut novel, Safe Harbor, resonates on many levels. Safe Harbor, a house that offers refugees with questionable legal status a home, is a central player in the novel's fast-paced and involving plot. But the words “safe harbor" also reflect the life financial advisor Pat Tierney has chosen to live after her husband Michael's sudden death. In the opening pages of the novel, Pat is ripped from her safe harbor by a dark secret from her husband's past. She is forced to meet challenges she could never imagine, but her courageous refusal to turn from danger makes her a very compelling protagonist. This novel will stay with you long after you've turned the final page." —Gail Bowen, author of the Joanne Kilbourn mysteries

"Safe Harbor, by Rosemary McCracken, is a clever, original combination of domestic cozy and international intrigue. Its heroine, a respectable widow with a good home, a loving family and a lucrative job, suddenly finds herself responsible for a young boy with a mysterious past somehow connected to her own. Torn between saving him and saving her comfortable life, she risks all she has in a story that’s full of twists, turns, surprises and startling revelations. Touching, intriguing and sometimes downright scary, this story hooked me from page one until the final action-packed pages." —Rosemary Aubert, author of the Ellis Portal mystery series

"This family drama quickly spirals into an intriguing mystery. A highly entertaining read!" —D.J. McIntosh, author of The Witch of Babylon

5.0 out of 5 stars An International Mystery Filled With Suspense March 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
A strange woman walks into Pat Tierney's office with a young boy and shatters precious memories of Pat's dead husband. The desperate woman claims the boy is the son of Pat's husband, and she needs someone to safeguard him from eminent danger until she can straighten things out. Pat has two troublesome teenage daughters at home and stress at work, why should she take on a stranger's child?

What would you do? I asked myself this question as I read the novel. At first I wouldn't believe the woman, neither did Pat. Would I be polite? No. Could I learn to accept the truth and love a boy who looked exactly like my dead husband? That's the crux of the novel. Pat's heartbroken by her husband's betrayal but the boy needs a safe harbor. The next day the boy's mother turns up dead, and Pat realizes her own family might be in danger.

This is a complex story filled with the type of international intrigue that could be ripped from modern day headlines. It takes place in Canada but might happen anywhere. There is a place called Safe Harbor, meant to give refugees a place to stay while the government decides their cases. But Safe Harbor doesn't live up to its name or purpose.

The stories of all the characters are expertly intertwined by a talented author, who makes the reader care what happens to Pat Tierney and her small family. I held my breath when danger loomed and sighed with relief when...you'll need to find out for yourself. If you enjoy mystery, suspense, and a bit of romance this is a book that gives you everything in one place.

Wow. Safe Harbor cracks open the mystery suspense genre with a twist, a female amateur detective solving crimes the new fashioned way with her skills as a seasoned financial advisor.

Like many single parents, Rosemary McCracken's Pat Tierney seems to do it all. Working fulltime she provides a good home for her kids, daughters Laura and Tracey and sound advice for her clients. But Pat has a weakness. Though satisfied with her little life, she is still nursing her grief for her husband Michael who died four years earlier. Then a woman she doesn't know drops a seven year old boy at her office declaring him to be her dead husband's love child. And promptly gets herself murdered.

Suddenly Pat and the boy are in the crosshairs of killers from an international organ smuggling ring, killers whose next target is the little boy, a child who knows too much to be allowed to live.

Spinning a skillful web of murder, deceit, family life and Pat's growing affection for Devon the handsome new man in her life, author McCracken crafts a story that quickly draws us in to Pat's world, a world bigger than she thought where global financial skullduggery intersects with individuals just trying to survive and ordinary people show extraordinary courage.

From the minute the story opens we're rooting for Pat as she risks everything to protect the little boy and her own girls and then catch the killers. Racing against time, she discovers a shadowy network of international investors who trade in death and want to eliminate her too. Safe Harbor is a fast-moving page turner that carries us along with Pat and her family as she risks her life to confront the leaders of this vicious scheme and bring them to justice.

Rosemary McCracken's Safe Harbor was shortlisted for a prestigious international award, the Debut Dagger sponsored by the British Crime Writers Association in 2010. I can't wait for her next book in the Pat Tierney series.
