After Jess got back from working as a camp counselor at Lake Wawasee in Code Name Cassandra, Jess had two choices: work the hot plate at her father's restaurant or go to the Michigan dunes with her best friend Ruth Abramowitz. This may seem like a no brainer choice, but Ruth's dad doesn't believe in cable, won't allow a phone at the house except for his cell for emergencies, and her best friend Ruth is busy going out with her boyfriend the whole time. But when Jess found out that her Great-aunt Rose would be coming to watch Jess and her older brother Doug while her parents took her brother to Harvard, playing endless video games with Skip, Ruth's geeky older brother, started to look pretty good. Needless to say, Jess had no idea that Amber Mackey went missing while she was on vacation and it was grossly unfair of everyone to blame her for not being there to find her. Hello, Jess had already told everyone that she had lost her powers, why was everyone blaming her?

Karen Sue Hanky. The lousy snitch had told everyone about how she found a missing kid at camp and now all of the popular kids are blaming Jess for not saving Amber. Jess has no idea who would want to kill a popular cheerleader and leave her body at the bottom of the quarry, but she feels that she is obligated to find out. When another cheerleader goes missing, Heather Montrose, one of the most popular girls in school, Jess knows that she has to do something. But how can she find Heather without revealing that she still has her psychic powers to the Feds? When Jess is able to find out, though, she knows that she has no choice but to go and rescue Heather - no one should have to go through the agonies that Heather is! Jess quickly drags Rob, her would be boyfriend if he would just get a clue, out to an abandoned shack where they find Heather. Jess is counting on Heather to turn her kidnappers over to the police, but Heather is too scared. Jess knows that she is the only one who can track down the people in her own town who are capable of committing these terrible crimes, but is it worth the price she will have to pay?

This is the third book in the "Lightning Girl" or 1-800-WHERE-R-U series and it is just fabulous! Meg Cabot/Jenny Carroll has created one of my favorite series with this one and I simply love Jess as a heroine. Jess is funny, smart, tough and not afraid to say or do exactly what she is thinking. She always makes me laugh when I read her stories - whether she is trying to finagle Rob into dating her, get her older brother Doug out of his room or beat up Karen Sue Hankey, she is always entertaining and fun to read about. This is an absolute must read series if you have liked any of Cabot/Carroll's other books. Highly recommended for everyone!

Junior year is starting! And Jess wants to start it off right. No fist fights! No detention! But all her plans change when people start blaming her for the death of a popular cheerleader who was killed while Jess was away that summer. Then another cheerleader, Heather Montrose, turns up missing. Now it's up to Jess to make sure Heather doesn't end up dead too. To make matters worse Karen Sue is sueing Jess for punching her in the nose. Not only that but Douglas is a suspect in the case. Not to mention the death threats Jess keeps recieving. What's a girl to do?

Another great book. Rob was so awesome in this book. I can't wait for Sanctuary, Book 4!

In Safe House, sequel to Code Name Cassandra, Jessica Mastriani must once again fend off the FBI. After getting struck by lightning and discovering her new ability to dream the exact location of anyone whose name or picture she sees Jess is forced by the ever present reporters to take up the FBI on its offer to study her power away from home. After escaping from the FBI with the help of her crush, Ron, and fooling the world into thinking that her power has disappeared when she returns from summer vacation it turns out that almost everyone is blaming her for the death of a popular cheerleader days before. Apparently they decided she hadn't lost her power when the cheerleader disappeared and bombarded her house with pleas for help, but her housesitting aunt refused to give them her number. Now the cheerleaders football playing boyfriend is taking her out to pizza to pump her for info on the Feds, her best friends brother is in love with her, her brother is a suspect in the cheerleaders death, her arch enemy is sueing her for breaking her nose, and another girl has turned up missing. How is Jess, who is not exactly a subtle person, supposed to deal with this and still manage to convince the world and her own surveillance team from the Federal Bureau of Investigation that she is unable to find people?

I love all of Jenny Carroll's books. This one is no exception.

5.0 out of 5 stars Karen Sue we hate you, March 30, 2006
Jessica Mastriani returns from a not so great vacation only to find out most all of her classmates are angry with her. Why? Simply because lightning girl wasn't there when they needed her. Jess's fellow classmate Amber was kidnapped and then murdered. Although Jess left with every one believing that she couldn't do the psychic thing any more, Karen Sue Hanky just happened to let it slip that it worked this summer with Shane. Horrible Karen Sue throughly deserved the punch to the nose that Jess delivers to her later. When another friend is kidnapped they come for her help again, and even though Jess didn't like the girl what can she do but help and get mixed up in the mess?

5.0 out of 5 stars The exciting third book of the 1-800-Where-R-You series., April 2, 2002
This review is from: Safe House (Mass Market Paperback)
Jess is starting school with the hope that she'll finally have a better image -- such as not not fighting all the time and being a little more toned down. But, of course, Jess can never hope to ever have a good life, because as soon as she arrives in school, everyone is blaming her for the murder of a cheerleader that took place just a day before school. Jess discovers that she's being blamed because everyone knows that she's "Lightning Girl" and should have done something with her powers to stop the murder, and that it was her fault that the student was murdered. Jess still wants to keep her identity secret, naturally, and she'd rather have it that her psychic powers aren't know to anyone. But when it starts to become obvious that the killer will strike again, Jess realizes that she must use her psychic abilities to stop the murders once and for all, if she isn't killed in the process. Jess is determined to keep her secret but also stop the murders from happening again, and yet, little does Jess realize that she's being stalked as well. Safe House, the thrilling third book of Jenny Carroll's 1-800-Where-R-You series, is a refreshing blast of a book, and while it's a serious plot, it still has some hilarious moments in the witty writing that Jenny Carroll is famous for -- if you've read The Mediator series, then the three books of the 1-800-Where-R-You series are no doubt just as fun and enjoyable to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Personal fave, October 7, 2004
REad it, you wont regreat it.

Skip -Ruth's brother - has a crush on Jess.

And that's the least of Jess's problems.

Just before school started, Amber was found dead.

Suddenly everyone is blaming Jess for not being there to find her, but that's not all... when another cheerleader -Heather - goes missing the problem just gets bigger.

There is a killer among the In-crowd, and is Jess' job to find him. With Rob's help of course.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Addition To The Series, April 4, 2002

Jess Mastriani was on vacation when Amber Mackey, a popular cheerleader went missing, and was eventually found dead, but that's no excuse for Jess. She should have known about it and found her before the tragedy.

But, Jess has a chance to redeem herself now that another popular cheerleader, Heather Montrose, disappears. It's now up to Jess to find Heather before it's too late, and gain popularity and respect at Ernest Pyle High School. But sometimes the things that sound the easiest are actually the hardest.

This is another great addition to the 1-800-WHERE-R-U series. I recommend this to any fan of paranormal/science fiction.

Book 3 in the 1-800-WHERE-R-You series is the best one yet!!! Safe House has it all--humor, suspense, mystery, and as in all of Jenny Carroll/Meg Cabbot's books, a bit of romance. I can't wait for Book 4, Sanctuary!!!! My best friend hates to read and I made her read Book 1 in this series, and now she is begging me to borrow the others!!! You will not be sorry if you buy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jess Mastriani Rides Again, April 16, 2011

It's not really Jess Mastriani's fault that she didn't know Amber Mackey was dead. After spending most of the summer herding musical prodigies and Camp Wawasee, Jess spent the last two weeks before school started with her best friend's family at the Michigan dunes. How could she have heard that her classmate had been found strangled to death at a local hangout in the limestone quarry? If Amber's death is shocking to Jess, she is even more stunned to find out that most of her classmates at Ernie Pyle High School blame her for the tragedy. First of all, as far as most of the world knows, Jess has lost her psychic ability to find people (gained after being struck by lightning the previous spring). More importantly, how could she have found Amber when she didn't even know she was missing?

When Jess' old friends (and with friends like these, who needs enemies) Special Agents Johnson and Smith take a sudden interest in Amber's football quarterback boyfriend, Mark Leskowski, he and Jess do some bonding over their mutual dislike for federal law enforcement. When another cheerleader goes missing, the rest of the pompon wavers turn to Jess for help. If she can just figure out a way to find the missing girl without tipping the Feds to the fact that she still has her powers, Jess will be able to exonerate Mark, placate the cheerleaders, and assure herself a place with the in-crowd.

This third book in Meg Cabot's 1-800-Where-R-You series is just as good as, if not better than, the two that preceded it. Jess is a scrappy heroine, fiercely loyal to her family and friends and lovable despite her tendency to throw punches first and ask questions later. The story is a solid, quick-paced mystery with enough twists to keep you guessing throughout. The real strength of this book though, as with any Meg Cabot novel, is the dialogue. Sharp and funny, Jess's voice leaps off the page. Makes sure you have book four of this series, Sanctuary, on hand. You'll want to get started as soon as you finish this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best of the Series (so far), August 15, 2010

Jessica Mastriani returns from her summer vacation to discover one of her classmates has been murdered. If that wasn't bad enough, many of Jess's classmates resent her for not being in town to save the girl with her 'Gift'. Then another girl from Jess's school goes missing and it's up to Jess to find her before she ends up dead, too.

This book was the strongest of the series so far. There was a real sense of urgency and I appreciated that the authority figures weren't so much depicted as 'Keystone Kops'. A little more character growth out of Jess would've been nice (wearing skirts to school instead of jeans doesn't really count). I wish Cabot would've peppered in more about Rob and his history in this book and the one prior. He's an awesome character but is more or less relegated to the guy who happens to show up just when Jess needs him.

A Note About the Kindle Edition: the only real issue I saw with the Kindle edition was extra space between paragraphs (like reading an article or story online). It's a minor distraction that doesn't take away from the story.
