About the Author
Dennis K. Lewis has over 27 years of experience in working to provide safe schools and communities. He is currently the director of school public safety for an urban/suburban school district with 25,000 students and 3,000 employees. He has held various offices for the National Association of School Safety and Law Enforcement Officers (NASSLEO) and is the past president of that organization. In addition, he is a member in good standing with the American Society for Industrial Security, a certified peace officer, and a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police. Judy M. Brunner and Lewis currently author a monthly column in
Principal Leadership entitled “Safety Tips for Principals.” Additionally, their method of training school staff and crisis management teams for responding to classroom and school emergencies by problem solving events through the use of tabletop exercises has been featured in a variety of national publications. Both Brunner and Lewis are widely respected in the field of school safety.
Judy M. Brunner has been in the education profession for 24 years as a kindergarten and special education teacher, as well as an elementary, middle, and high school principal. She is currently a high school principal in Springfield, Missouri. Brunner and Dennis Lewis are current practitioners in the field of school safety, and they have worked with school districts across the United States on topics related to creating and maintaining safe schools, crisis planning and management, managing aggressive and violent students, and bullying prevention. Additionally, they have authored seven books on the topic of school safety, written numerous articles for national school safety magazines and periodicals, and have served as guest lecturers for several universities. They are the cofounders of Edu-Safe LLC, a school safety and advisory service.
