Good but Short, October 10, 2006

Industrialist Duncan W. Adams has gone missing and is presumed dead. The problem? His family can't find his will. They suspect it is concealed in one of the many safes the eccentric Adams collected, and hire you, an expert safecracker, to locate the missing document.
Safecracker, The Ultimate Puzzle Adventure, is very similar to the game of the same name that came out nearly ten years ago. So if you liked that one, you'll like this one. Though done by a different Developer entirely (the original Safecracker was Daydream Software and this one is Kheops studios), Safecracker 2006 could be a sequel. AS in the first game, the main point here is cracking safes, not the plot. You do pick up a few letters and such along the way that give you insight into the Adams family (heh heh...wonder if that was intentional?). But you're alone in the house, there is no character interaction and very little story besides that which I've stated here.
The graphics are quite lovely. Along the way I decided if I were even to become filthy rich, I'd hire a game developer to design my house, because the Adams mansion is just the kind of place I'd like to live. Colours are rich, especially in the second floor bedrooms. However, there was less possibility of interaction than I like in a game. I would have liked to be able to view pictures more closely, open drawers, turn on faucets. This is the kind of thing I've become used to in recent games, and I found it strange that it should be missing. The actual ground you could cover and number of hotspots were quite limited in my opinion.
Of the sound, well, the less said the better. Aside from the clicks and dings inherent to the puzzles, it was limited to two or three repetetive themes, which would play, grow silent, then come back ad nauseam. Several times I was moved to yell at my computer to shut up.
The puzzles, however, were entertaining. The 33 safes featured a number of opening mechanisms, some of them quite clever. There was the inevitable slider (a quite difficult one), a couple of "Mastermind" type puzzles, some cryptograms and a variety of others. Some safes contained clues or parts for solving other safes. However, many of the safes could be solved independent of the clues. This could be both irritating--as when you opened a safe only to find somthing you no longer needed--and uplifting, as it gave you a real ego boost.
The safe opening techniques did get a little repetetive. I thought there were altogether too many keypads. And quite a few just plain keys were featured. All in all, the variety was not as great and the safes not as interesting as in the original Safecracker. If this Douglas Adams was trying to collect unusual safes, I don't think he looked very far.
I played Safecracker 2006 after a long gaming hiatus and found it was just what I needed. It was not as challenging as I usually like games to be--I finished in just over 7 hours--but I didn't really care. For a restful afternoon of puzzle solving, this was just the ticket.

Safe Cracker Review, August 10, 2007

I LOVE the game! As a Lock Smith, I found the elaborate locking mechanisms intriguing and inventive. The game graphics are rich and lavish with detail. I would have liked to have had a few more clues, and some more ability to interact with the enviorment. The game offers excellent mental excercise and satisfaction when finaly "cracking a safe open". Good game for any age level I certainly hope they design a third game for the series.

Quite the puzzler, November 9, 2006

Having purchased the original when released several years ago, and thoroughly enjoying it, I was excited to see a new version out for 2006. It lived up to the challenge I expected from this game. It is difficult to find truly challenging puzzle games, and you won't be disappointed with this. My only disappoint came after solving it as the original provided a video of the programmers, although this version does offer the opportunity to replay and select from several final outcomes.
