...if you can wait for the products to get to you from Amazon, you can do just as good a job defeating bed bugs as the professionals will - probably better, because you have a more personal interest. First of all, never buy pillows or mattresses without buying bed bug-proof pillow and mattress covers from Target (they might be available elsewhere, but I found them at Target). If you don't use these covers and you get bed bugs, your mattresses and pillows are pretty well shot. We didn't and we learned the hard way. When we got bed bugs, we had to throw them in the dumpster and buy news ones. Covers are critical. Don't spend big $$$ on mattresses and pillows without buying protective covers for them. If you do get bed bugs, three products will wipe them out. Put Climbup Insect Interceptors under each bed post. If you have supports under your mattress, put one under each support, too. The Interceptors come in different sizes. Fill the trough of the Interceptors with Diatomaceous Earth. Diatomaceous Earth is harmless to humans, but rips bed bugs and other insects to shreds. Also, make sure your bed is not touching the wall. Sprayaway Bed Bugs is very effective for spraying around your house or apartment. You can use it to spray the perimeter and anywhere else - it doesn't stain or harm walls, woodwork, carpeting, furniture, etc. Once I used these products, it not only killed the bed bugs, it killed the eggs and hatching bed bugs. Bed bugs are masters at hiding, so you have to seek them out. Spray anywhere there are cracks and other hiding places, including any spaces where your bed parts fit together - you might have to take your bed apart to get to these areas. Bed bugs like to hide behind pictures on the wall, too.Read more ›

I give diatomaceous earth a great rating, but please note that I used it religiously. Less than diligent usage may yield less than five-star results.

Anyway, here's the important stuff:
1) I had bed bugs (confirmed by spotting them). The very same week I put this stuff down, I stopped getting bites. I assume it worked.

2) When I put it down, I focused on (a) where the floor boards meet the wall; (b) all corners; (c) behind and underneath all furniture; and (d) around, but not in, my bed. For the first two weeks, I also spread diatomaceous earth thinly over the whole floor at night, and swept it up in the morning.

3) I did not completely clean up all of it for months. Actually, there's probably a lot still hidden under furniture. This is important because my roommates removed the diamaceous earth from their floors after two weeks and started getting bites again. They repeated this several times before they got serious.

4) We have two cats. Neither of them seemed bothered by the diatomaceous earth, despite the warnings on the label. Likewise, I expect a feline to be worse for any chemicals the exterminator might use (just going off intuition). Of course, warning labels exist for a reason, so proceed at your own risk. Maybe you or your cat are different.

5) Diatomaceous earth gets everywhere once you put it down. You will inevitably breathe some of it, and it tastes like chalk, or perhaps essence of staleness. It was a negligible irritation, contrasted with getting bitten by bed bugs every night. It will also get on your clothes. If you beat/slap your clothes, it comes right out.

In closing, I now recommend diatomaceous earth to everyone, especially college students. And if you are considering buying this, you can't possibly be going through a great time right now. So, I wish you good luck and Godspeed.

I can attest to DE working on bedbugs. About a year ago, I suddenly found my small single-apartment unit infested with them - it was insane! From what I could gather, mine was a fairly 'heavy' infestation. Both the physical and psychological affects on me from these parasites, was enough to almost push me over the edge; no fooling. After doing careful research online for possible ways to get rid of them, I first tried a couple of 'traps' (including a yeast trap) but to no avail. Then I tried the DE. I made use of an empty dish washing-liquid bottle, (for the spout-tip), and filled it with the DE so I could "spray" the powder into every crack and crevice by 'squeezing the DE-filled plastic bottle. I then applied a "moderately thick" dusting over the carpets. Lastly, I dusted my mattress on both sides, and made sure it got into every mattress seam, etc. - then covered the mattress on top with a plastic sheet which draped down the sides but did not touch the floor. (I also disposed of all my old bedding, just to be sure.)

The first application, I just left for about 2-3 days, (btw, I'd already noticed that it seemed to be working at this point). Then I vacuumed it all up, making sure that the vacuum cleaner contents were properly disposed of, and I even cleaned all the hoses, nozzles of the vacuum completely afterwards; then did an equally thorough re-application of the DE. About 2 more days went by, & 'no more bedbugs'! I wanted to make absolutely sure, so I did another vacuuming/ re-application. All together, it was maybe 5-7 days, total, and they were completely gone... for good. This stuff is a God-send, in my opinion. I used the Safer brand from Ace Hardware, as well. *.Note: another thing I found out while I was doing this, was that Windex (or rather, 'ammonia window cleaner') was great for if I actually came across a living bedbug... one light 'spritz' of the ammonia mist would instantly immobilize and kill them on the spot, I discovered.
