4.0 out of 5 stars Works for us
We got and returned quite a few gates. I didn't want to spend a lot of money and got tired of ordering and having to return things that didn't work. My space is 33 on the bottom and 34 on the top and for some reason a lot of pressure mount walk through gates seem to skip from 33 to 35. To small without the extention too big with it. Anyway I got this gate because I was out of options and didn't want to have my 18 month old fall down the stairs. It was easy to install. Yes if you screw the screws straight into drywall they will come right back out. Thats not rocket science. We do have crappy walls in our townhouse so we had to ancor some of the screws. It comes with a template and that makes it very easy to install. Its two sided so you have to watch for that. It took my husband and I about 30 minutes to get this installed and working. I give it 4 stars because it does what I need it to do but not exactly as I wanted. It is easy to open and close and when properly installed my daughter can climb onto te ledge and hold on for a few seconds and it doesn't move. After I installed it both my husband and I pulled and pushed on it and it held up well. We have been using it for about a month now and I'm used to it. My husband can walk up the stairs and just step right over it, and he can do the same thing going down as well. My cat seems to be okay jumping over it going up and down. The curve makes it so I you can get closer to the top of the stairs and the latch before you have to open it. If something goes wrong with it and I would not recommend it anymore I will come back and edit this review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Innovative Gate, January 30, 2008
This review is from: Safety 1st The Curve Gate White (Baby Product)
I purchased this gate because I liked the idea of the extra space on the bottom step. I think having a gate on the bottom step is just as important as the one on the top of the stairs. My problem is that I am over 6' so as you could imagine it was hard to lean over from the 2nd step, while holding a child, to unlock a typical gate. THIS GATE WORKS PERFECTLY! Once installed I found it easy to use. I purchased one for my house and 1 for each of the grandparents.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for Short Parents, October 19, 2008
This review is from: Safety 1st The Curve Gate White (Baby Product)
This is a great gate. I bought it because I'm not quite 5' tall. Because of the curve of this gate, I can step over it from the top step instead of from the second step, which I wouldn't be able to do.

I attached it to a 2x4 cable-tied to the banister on one side and used MY OWN 4" drywall screws to attach it to the wall and stud on the other side. Seems secure to me. My 19 mo old learned how to hang on it and it still stands strong. We've had it about a year now.

It gets 4 stars for 2 very small reasons: the wheel doesn't glide very easily on my carpet, so we have to lift slightly to open and close it smoothly. Also, you'll have to slam this thing to have the latch catch. It's a good latch, but the closing is loud. To keep this from waking sleeping babies, close it before the babies are asleep and step over it when they are.

I purchased this gate because I liked the idea of having the added surface space at the top of the stairs. Yet, the flaws in this item are countless. First, assembly was extremely time consuming. They did provide a template to drill the holes, which was nice, but in all actuality you really don't need it. Secondly, once installed and adjusted you have to practically slam the gate to get it to close, which is impossible to do while on the steps of the stairs. Third, the whole assembly requires you to install 12 screws (6 on each side) a bit much I thought but obviously not enough for this bulky gate because after only 3 days the screws came out of the wall. Needless to say, I will be returning this item and will reinstall my North States Auto-Close Metal Pressure Mount gate, which I would now highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic gate - other reviews are misleading, August 14, 2010
This review is from: Safety 1st The Curve Gate White (Baby Product)
I just want to point out this gate is made for the top of stairs and provides an extra amount of landing/standing space at the top.
That said, many of the reviews out there lead me to believe people are short on common sense.
I followed the install directions, used the template, took more than 30 seconds to line everything up correctly and in lieu of the Philips head screws provided I used longer hex head deck screws (about 2.5 inches long).

It's been a wonderful gate for 2 years now and yes you do have to close it with force...my 2 year old daughter can do it just fine.

I get compliments on it every time we have guests over.

3.0 out of 5 stars works well, but a little hard to close..., May 31, 2009
This review is from: Safety 1st The Curve Gate White (Baby Product)
I purchased this gate when we moved into our new 2 story house. My husband installed it with now problem and I do like that it gives a little landing at the top to step onto. My old kirs, 6 and 9, have no problem using it, except that yuo have to REALLY push to get it closed. Because the entire side has to latch together, you have to push it hard towards the middle to make sure the gate is latched properly. Other than that I think it's great. So far my toddler has not tried to open it or scale over!

This design of this gate is a nice idea but it did not work correctly for us. It would't close, you had to slam it, and many times it still didn't close. We returned it and got a lift and lock gate for half the price, it works much better.

I loved the idea of the curve for the top of our stairs. Unfortunately, after three months, closing this gate has become very difficult. The hardware slides, and securing it to the lock is quite hard. Need to use two hands and pull from the bottom.

We re-tighten the hardware and have tried tricks to keep it together, but it is time to take this off and try something else.

I should also mention: it takes up a lot of space (compared to other gates) and does a lot of damage to the wal to install-likely because of its weight.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just what we needed, August 21, 2008

This review is from: Safety 1st The Curve Gate White (Baby Product)
We bought this gate because we have a bit of a gap between our top stair and the rail we'd have to mount the gate on. The curve of the gate keeps toys or little body parts from going down the stairs or under the gate. The gate is very sturdy. It took a while for us to install it because of the way our wall and railing are, but we figured it out fairly quickly. I really like the gate. The only reason I gave it a 4 instead of 5 is because of the latch. It's definitely secure and easy to open and close (push the button over and down - it's childproofed!), but if you're going up or down the stairs with one free hand, it's a bit of a challenge. I also didn't like that the hole guide for installing the gate was two-sided. The middle holes almost overlapped and made it a little more difficult during the installation. Other than the install and not being able to open it easily with one hand, the gate is perfect. I'd highly recommend it to anyone.
