Some of the negative reviews turned me off to the product but I decided to buy them anyways because I couldn't find a sliding plate cover for my GFCI outlets and I didn't want our child to see us removing the easier outlet safety plugs on a regular basis.

I think this product must have been improved some because the ones I bought can only be pushed in on one side and they work exactly as per the instructions. Basically, pushing the left button unlocks the top button and pushing on the top button unlocks the latch from the ground hole. With the top button continually depressed, you need to patiently rock the plug up and down until it comes out. It's particularly frustrating if you're in a rush or otherwise tired because on the first pull or two there is very little noticeable progress. Personally I feel that the tight fit is a sign of a good design and most certain to frustrate even those toddlers with good coordination.

After a few weeks of regular use, my husband can now remove them with one hand in a single pull. The best part is it looks like he's just tugging on the plug so our little one is unlikely to catch onto the required button sequence.

Too bad they cost so much (relative to the plain plugs) or I'd consider using them everywhere since they are fairly low profile and thus inconspicuous.

The size and grip of the product might make it difficult for people with large hands or who lack coordination/strength in their fingers/hands.

Previous reviews are accurate about this product in two ways. First they are correct that these plugs do what they are intended for and that is to keep little fingers from prying the plug out of the outlet. Second, they are correct in that it is also near impossible for an adult to pull them out as well. I read the directions on the box and did exactly what it said, and it took forever for me to get the plug out. My fingers are still sore from trying. Prior to purchasing this product, I read the reviews and decided that despite the complaints, I would give this product a try. Another reviewer suggested only putting one plug in first to test it out. I am glad that I followed that recommendation. I will not be putting the other plugs in and will be returning this product. True it keeps the little one out, but I need something that is not only secure, but more accessible for me. I can't spend 5 minutes trying to get the plug out of the outlet every time that I need to use it.

Update 6/28/11: I spent some more time playing with the plugs. Although the product packaging says to push all of the tabs (sides and top) and pull straight out, this removal method just doesn't work for me. The plug wouldn't budge. Here's what works for me: I push all of the tabs as directed, and then I use my index finger on my other hand to pull up on the bottom of the outlet plug (as if motioning for someone to come toward you). The plug comes out easily every time. I now have the outlet covers all over my house.

I've been using these for the past three years, and they work. Yes they are hard to remove, but isn't that the point? I have a very active son who never messes with the outlets because of these devices. I am buying more for our second baby. Execellent product.

Please disregard all the "too difficult to remove" negative reviews for this product... Originally I was disappointed at how difficult these seem to be to remove from the wall once snapped into place. Something happened today with my child, who is fortunately still with us, which has compelled me to write this review.

I'll make a long story short because I'm still quite shaken, but the ones you simply press into the wall with no locking mechanism are complete garbage, any child with a fingernail (most children) can defeat them. The fact that these actually LOCK into the plug is a FEATURE, and after today, I don't care how long it takes me to fiddle with this device to remove it from the outlet, I am using them exclusively.

Pro Tip: press the left side in (towards the right), it appears the right side does nothing, but none the less, squeezing both sides accomplishes the same thing (pressing the left side towards the right). Once this is done, internally, the detent/"lock" on the top is unlocked and can be pressed down. Once you press the top "lock" down you don't have to continue squeezing the sides. While continuing to hold the top "lock" down, use your free hand/fingernails to remove the plug from the wall, similar to the non locking ones...

(when I say fingerprint multiple times in the video, I mean fingernail)

I switched from the basic plastic covers to these when my son learned how to pull those out easily.

These require two hands and some wiggling back and forth to get out: they don't pull straight out.

There's no way my son (or any kid!) is going to get these out, and that's their purpose... To keep him safe. I'm willing to spend the extra 10 seconds and a little minor effort to pull them out to keep it that way.

No worrying about toddlers or even pre-schoolers figuring these out...very well made and they do their job.

To open them you have to depress the top button, then pull down towards the floor a bit and out. It takes a few minutes of practice and some finger strength for adults to get it right, but there is absolutely no sense in installing the 'other' outlet covers that can be ripped out of the wall then choked on by a baby is there? I've also had a few of those 'other' ones snap off inside the outlet, which really was a treat..should not happen with these plugs.

So if you want safety these are the plugs to get. Been using them for nearly 5 years now and never have my kids come even close to getting them removed. I personally was nearly electrocuted as a child, having stuck my parents car keys into a socket...trust me, it only takes a second for a life threatening incident to happen with your child. Why take chances???

Pick up a few extras for grandma's house too.
