I initially purchased this product so that I would have a swing gate to let my dog into another area. 1.0 out of 5 stars Ugly, flimsy, and hard to adjust
This gate only looks nice on one side. From the other side, you can see why the gate is so flimsy. It is very poorly designed. Also, to adjust this gate for a different location in your house, you have to loosen and then tighten 4 screws.

I recommend model 41823 instead. It looks better, feels sturdier, and is easier to adjust. It is also harder for a toddler...

I initially purchased this product so that I would have a swing gate to let my dog into another area. When I realized it could be spring-loaded I installed it that way and have been satisfied because I didn't have to drill holes. The gate is low enough for an adult to step over, if need be, but is easily removed to allow pets through and can be quickly reinstalled in the same area without readjusting (as with my previous gate). It does what I need it to do without damage to my walls, and at a good price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good gate, but could be better!, October 24, 2009
This review is from: Safety 1st Lift Lock and Swing Gate (Baby Product)
I absolutely love this gate even though I've found 1 flaw with it. It's not the old one. I think it was called the lift & lock gate. I got this one because the old one my husband finally broke so I needed another one for the top of the stairs. All the other gates are expensive & since we have a baby and a toddler the old one wouldn't do. I went to Babies 'r Us & found this gate. It seemed perfect since our stairway is wider than most. I have to admit it was a pain to put together because I put all the screws in to hold the gate together only to find that they have to be really loose to adjust it to the right length. No problem just tighten them enough where the buttons don't fall off. It's not that hard to install the hinges if you're using the hardware mount. You don't need the templates if you have 2 people. Just lengthen the gate, slide it in the hinges then once it's against the wall have 1 person slide the gate out then the other drill them into place. Plus this gate will slide out the hinges if you want to move it somewhere else or take it with you to use it as a pressure mount. And that's where it's not a "GREAT" but still a well worth it.

You do have to loosen the screws to adjust the gate then tighten the screws again to have the gate fit other areas. With the lift & lock gate once it was unlocked you could adjust it to whatever fit you needed. You didn't have to worry about screwing anything in. But sometimes with the other gate it was a hassle to slide it closed when the little hinges would come out of their holes which is why my husband finally broke out out of frustration when trying to adjust it. It's probably why they didn't make this one the same way. Plus, it allows us to simply unlock the gate & swing it out of the way so both our toddler & ourselves can do it one-handed to get up or down the stairs without having to unlock it and readjust it using the pressure mounted system. That REQUIRED both hands. All in all I think this gate is definitely worth the money with it's versatility and ease of use. So much so that we bought 2, 1 for the top & bottom of our stairs.

Oh, & it does have Smart Technology which is great. But if you have uneven walls like mine it won't show green; however, the gate is still secure. My husband yanks on it to make sure it's closed.

2.0 out of 5 stars Please bring back the old one, February 9, 2011

I bought this gate to replace a broken Lift and Lock. I love the old gate. I am not impressed with the new gate. It took both me and my husband to get it put together because you have to screw it together. Finding the screw from the opposite side and then holding the gate snug enough against the door frame to get it sturdy was a two person job. I cannot get it to fit tightly against the door frame and I'm sure the kids will pull it down easily.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Gate, January 10, 2011
This review is from: Safety 1st Lift Lock and Swing Gate (Baby Product)
We purchased this gate to go at the bottom and top of our stairs. It works great, is affordable and easy to use. We also purchased a Northgate gate for the hallway which we are going to replace with another one of these gates. The other gates do not function as well and have torn up our walls. Also, this gate does extend further than it says on the package. Our staircase is a lot wider than most and fits perfectly. Great Product!

this gate is no longer made of any quality nor does it have any style. the old poroduct was finished on both sides, it was built out a heavier plastic and was easy to operate. this gate has none of those features. the compoany really cut the corners but did not cut the price.

The gate didn't line up just right but it pressure mounts just fine and will keep babies off the stairs but I would only recommend it for the bottom of a stair case. Took about a half hour to install, maybe would have taken less if someone had read the directions FIRST, hint, hint. There are two different size screws so just be aware :-)

2.0 out of 5 stars Difficult to Open and Reinstall, January 2, 2011
This review is from: Safety 1st Lift Lock and Swing Gate (Baby Product)
The lift mechanism only moves the pressure mount 1/4 to 3/8 inch. This is not enough for the gate to be tight. For the gate to be tight against the wall, I had lock the gate 1 click wider. Then with this setup, even with the lift lock open, the gate will not easily squeeze into opening.

So whenever I had to open/close the gate, I have to apply force/pressure to the pressure mounts (on the opposite side of the lift lock). This will allow me to squeeze the gate into the opening. Then with the lift lock, it will tighten so the gate is stable.

Because I have to apply pressure manually to the pressure mounts to open/close the gate, it takes me 2-3 minutes every time to get the gate aligned and reinstalled. I returned the product because it is just not usable for my purpose.

I realized the way to get around this is to buy gates with frame that doesn't release with opening/closing of the gate. These are models with doors that swing but frame is stationary (always pressure mounted against the wall).

1.0 out of 5 stars Hot Garbage-Buyer Beware!!, January 23, 2012

Wayne John (New York, NY, US) - See all my reviews

Don't buy this product. If I could give this gate a negative star I could. Safety 1st products tend to be a hit or miss. They saturate the baby market but their products are poorly constructed and very cumbersome.

I purchased this gate from Babies R' Us because it looked like one I had in the past with my 1st child that worked pretty well. Unfortunately I could not say the same for this gate. The instructions are gruelingly difficult to interpret (and I'm a pretty handy person) with poor illustrations and terrible technical writing.

When I finally got it constructed I discovered that you have to have a screwdriver handy at all times if you are to reposition or even move the gate! To adjust the width of the gate you can't simply lengthen it and secure it. You have to adjust the sliding tabs by using a screwdriver. If you unscrew the tabs to far, they fall out, the gate falls apart and it's back to the drawing board with constructing the gate all over again!

If you enjoy wasting your time and money then purchase this gate. If not then save yourself the headache and look for a better brand.
