Maybe I just got the only two defective items, and everyone else will have better luck.
Beth Obrigewitsch
My son can climb over it when he's awake which isn't safe, but he doesn't thrash about where he would be lifted enough to fall over in his sleep.
Becky Rose
The Safety 1st Top-of-Mattress Bed Rail is easy to install, quick to take down and does it's job relatively well.

I have multiple children and have been through multiple bed rails. Believe when I tell you, this is the best bed rail on the market and it is a snap to use. When you are ready to make the bed, depress the two side rail handles and the bedrail raises up for sheets and comforters, blankets or whatever else your child needs. We bought two, one for each side of the bed, and I love them.

This works great to keep our two year old from falling out of the bed during the night. She climbs over it just fine during the day, but two year olds climb over everything :) It is serving the purpose of giving me the peace of mind at night, since she is a nervous sleeper and moves around the bed a lot

Does NOT work well with my pillow top mattress, and my son can easily fall off my bed with this. I ended up using an old headboard wedged on the side of the bed to keep my little guy from falling off the bed. This might be ok for a bed where the mattress is maybe 12 inches or less from the floor.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I had a bed rail when my children were small, over 30 years ago. It had "arms" that slid between the mattress and box springs to hold it in place. It worked great and was easy to take with up when visiting the grandparents. When my 7 year old grandson was about 2, I tried to find one for him. The only ones I could find were ones that had to be belted to the box springs. This would be hard to do with a full size or larger mattress.

I was excited to find this bed rail since it didn't look like it needed to be strapped to the bed. It doesn't. After you assemble the pieces, you slide the "arms" between the mattress and box springs. There are rubbery, nubby grips on the end so it won't slide out easily. Be sure the height adjustment is fully extended. One the rail is in place, you push down on the ends to lock it to the correct height for the mattress you are using. It shouldn't be going anywhere and there is no gap between it and the mattress that the child could fall through. They do suggest having one on each side of the bed since pushing a bed up to the wall could result in the child falling between the bed and the wall. We have done that, but have never had a problem, although I could see that happening if the bed moves easily.

I was not able to use this on the mattress in my guest room. It is a pillow top and too thick. I can use it on an old twin mattress that is not a pillow top. The instructions say it is suitable for use on beds with mattresses a minimum of 4" thick to a maximum of 10" thick.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
This is our first bed rail system. Our children currently own a bunk bed with built in side rails, and a bed with raised sides. We were excited to get this because of our travel needs. I've had to turn a day bed backwards to keep my kids from falling out, or pad the sides with pillows (bumpers) beneath the blankets, then tuck the blanket in tightly so the pillows stay in place. It works well, until there's not enough pillows.

There is little assembly with the Safety 1st top-of-Mattress Bed Rail, all of it is snap and click stuff. Assembly took about 5 minutes. Tucks nicely under a mattress of pretty much any size in length (Queen, Twin, Full, King). It is quite small in length however and doesn't cover much space, but it's perfect since our kids typically stay in place while they sleep. You adjust the height of the bed rails with the press of a button, then press it down to fit snuggly over your child's bed. It does take up about 6" of your child's bed space, but that's better than having a gap they can slip between. The height of the mattress does matter, and this bed rail system will not fit anything beyond the standard height of one mattress.

Overall great design and I look forward to using it on our trip to Grandma's house.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Fresh out of the box, this unit comes in 2 major pieces. There are no screws or other hardware involved in installation. You will not need a screwdriver, unless you're like me and need help opening the box.

The pieces lock firmly together with an audible snap. When you tuck it under the mattress, the guard rail ends up sitting on top of the mattress, rather than beside it. To lock it in place, you press it down until the indicator display shows that it's locked. When in place, it is very firm and solid. It locks on to the mattress over the bedding, so making the bed afterwards will not look smooth and tucked in because this unit is on top of the bed. Not beside it.

Build quality is high. The materials all look and feel sturdy enough to function well for the purpose intended. It is very nice that there is no gap between the gate and the bed. The only hassle is that you have to make the bed around it, unless you want to unlock it long enough to get everything tucked in. Then you'll have to re-lock it when you need to use it. Unlocking it is easy enough to do. You press a button on each side to release the tension.

Neutral color scheme.
