I'll preface this with the fact that I'm a bit disappointed that there is no physical CD for this soundtrack, as I don't like just having digital copies of music. And I'm not sure how to review a soundtrack, but I wanted to put out there how good this one is and say that it's definitely worth buying.
Beyond that, the soundtrack for Safety Not Guaranteed is amazing. I don't usually purchase soundtracks. The few I have came as bonuses in DVDs, or were gifts. However, after watching Safety Not Guaranteed, I went straight to look for the soundtrack. The soundtrack sounds very indie, in that it's a bit low-key and rather charming music; not that that's a bad thing -- it fits the movie completely. It's really very comforting when people like Ryan Miller compose these lovely pieces for movies, rather than throw in a bunch of pop hits. It's a good change from the big-time composers in big-name movies, or big-name celebs singing ill-fitting songs.
There are a couple of themes that are repeated throughout the soundtrack, and it's just beautiful. You'll hear the chords again from "Big Machine" throughout a few songs, as well as the melody from "Hairy Arms."
There are songs that are bouncy, melancholy, and dramatic. Whether or not you loved the movie, you should buy this soundtrack. Outside of the context of the movie, it sounds like it could be the soundtrack to your own life. You can picture yourself in a movie when you listen to to "Gaming Laptop" on the train.
"Big Machine" and "Architects and Engineers" I believe are by Ryan Miller and his band Gusters, respectively, and are a nice little treat. I absolutely love Summer Fiction's "She's Bound To Get Hurt."
Of course, the main reason I bought (and others have wanted, from my circle of friends) this soundtrack was for the acoustic version of "Big Machine" that Mark Duplass played. It's quite a gem. The candid sound of the lap dulcimer/zither makes you remember the bonfire scene, and the lyrics make sense in the context of the movie as well as to how society functions. Too perfect.
I gave this four stars, because Civilian by Wye Oak was left out and "Big Machine" is placed as track one instead of in sequential order from the actual movie (I think it belongs before "Popped Collar"). I think I could have done without "Hard On Your Man," which, to be honest, I don't even remember hearing in the movie. It's in a scene where Darius, Arnau, and Jeff are in a restaurant, but plays for a few seconds and I don't understand why it would be on the soundtrack when Civilian was not.
