Protecting your online business is a never-ending battle between security systems and existing technologies and the sophistication of those seeking to thwart them. Defending your network or web-based business does not rest solely on finding the solution to just one security problem; it relies on your ability to devise an entire program that puts a stop to the security hazards you face today and anticipates those you may face tommorrow. SAFETY NET reveals the different types of attacks your online business can experience and details prevention, detection, and recovery countermeasures you can employ to protect your business from financial losses due to online sabotage.

REVIEW: Safety Net: Protecting Your Business on the Internet

Security for Internet business is a big deal... a complex and confusing big deal at that. From reading 'Safety Net' it is my belief that Kathleen Sindell grasped that and tackled it head on when writing this book. The blurb announces that it "...is written in accessible, nontechnical language to provide you with practical solutions to your most pressing concerns..." but sometimes blurbs can lie! Happily in this case it doesn't and as soon as you commence reading you realise this.

You are taken through what seems to be every element of Internet security from vulnerable web servers to how to handle public relations after you've been breached and this is all done in a very logical way. The first section addresses exactly what the book is about, who it is aimed at, how it is organised and how to use it, with the rest of the book following on in the same logical order.

I found that throughout the whole book the tone in which it is written is both encouraging yet reassuring without being patronising. This, like the nontechnical language, is evident from the very start, "...If you cannot find the topic, look it up in the glossary. You may discover that it is included in the book but is referred to in a way you did not anticipate...Information security is a complex field: Don't feel bad if you have to use the table of contents, index and glossary frequently...", so you are reassured that on first glance you may not find what you are looking for, but there are plenty of resources to help you find it. Fortunately the suggestion to use the referencing tools is backed up by high quality indexes and glossaries so the reader should have no problem finding that obscure piece of information.

'Safety Net's' straightforward, logical and honest approach really did make a difference to my reading and understanding of the intricacies of e-business security. Having read books on the same subject before and been completely baffled by them I was a little wary when presented with this one. However Sindell certainly knows how to make something which is potentially very confusing easily understandable.

CONCLUSION: The clarity of concepts, abundance of resources and jargon-free language really do make me recommend this book to anyone who requires in-depth, yet understandable information concerning Internet security issues.
