Book Description

Matte, pronounced mah-tay, is the word used in some forms of martial arts to stop a fight. It's the Japanese word for stop or wait. Sam (short for Samantha) has made a hobby out of learning the various fighting disciplines, but she also happens to be a sexual submissive. What better safeword than matte?

Sam wants to find someone to submit to who she can't beat in a fight. She's tried to make it work with men from the scene who know nothing about fighting, but it doesn't feel real to her - she needs someone who can truly control her. However, after dating from the fight scene and discovering not all guys like to spank their girlfriends, she's decided to just back away from the whole dating thing for a while... until Fate decides to step in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent mix of BDSM (D/s and S/M)! March 15, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I enjoyed getting to know Samantha and Ethan. I think their story will rings lots of bells just in the relationship department. Especially because they do such an incredible job handling all aspects of their lives. There is a great deal of respect for each other.

Pretty heavy pain (no sugar kink here!) but I found it believable. LOTS of negotiation and communication. It wasn't long but, by the end I really felt like they had earned their HEA and it felt real. Heavy Dom -- but caring and sensitive. This reinforced for me I am FAR more masochist than submissive. I just cannot get into orgasm denial and things like preventing speaking. But again I'm more masochist than sub so my interest is really in the pain/pleasure/sensation dynamic. Creative guy - some new implements here (you'll have to read it to find out!) and a variety of play. Very high on intensity scale!

Footnote: So folks know since the BDSM genre is exploding with authors and what is written is not always anywhere near the way things work in real life. There have been many discussions on different boards and websites about the difference between sadism and domination (and masochism and submission). Ethan is a sadistic Dom and Samantha is a submissive masochist. They are in it not only for the pain but for the power exchange. One does not have to equate with the other. There are masochistic dominants and sadistic submissives and folks that are not dominant or submissive but definitive into S&M. Here is why I mention this: Samantha would NOT have been happy with a Sadist. So it's a bit of a misnomer to refer to Ethan solely as a sadist. He's not. He is a Dominant who is a sadist. There is a difference.

Samantha had a need to give up control - so she needed a Sadistic Dom or a Dom who was also a sadist. Because the book portrays the pain aspects so well I think folks will focus on that aspect -- but the D/s here is just as strong as the S/M. This is important because this is an excellent book and there are very few that portray BDSM in a more honest light (it's still fiction guys). Yeah yeah they are both hot and gorgeous but it's fiction (in real life you have receding hairlines and rolls...we all just deal with it).

I point this out overall because many reviews are focused on him being a sadist but he is also one helluva dominant. Sometimes people who are NOT into pain avoid books with more pain (S/M) because it is not their kink. I'm hopeful that will not be the case here as I think the way they negotiate, the honesty and communication between then, and how he is as a dominant will strike a chord with the solely D/s crowd - I'd hate them to miss this one!

P.S. As a masochist with some submissive tendencies he would not work for me even though I would likely love to be on the other side of his pain giving - some aspects I could deal with but the speech restriction would be a No - I'm unwilling to give up my power of verbal communication :-)

Wow!

I feel like that is understating the book. I might have had a perpetual orgasm while reading this book. Lord knows that it reminds me of my husband and I testing my pain thresholds, and gave us knew ideas on how to push limits. (In a safe, controlled environment.) Every inch of this book moved me, made me feel wicked and naughty. My heart was pounding and I think I feel in so much lust with, Ethan.

The story was very well written. I was sucked in from the very beginning when Samantha stated she had given up on dating in general, because disclosing her kink to someone that turned out to be vanilla was embarrassing. God, I related. Samantha was such a strong and likable female character and I respected her so much for her choices and questions. She didn't go blind into anything, and she embraced who she was so totally and without shame I think I have a girl crush on her.

Ethan is every masochists wet dream! With each page, every word that came out of his mouth, I was like a melted puddle of submissive goo at his feet. He never dropped being an Alpha male. He was the dominant, but he was a smart dominant and I loved that he was written that way. He knew how to read Samantha at all times. He stayed focus to helping both reach full release (unless it was all about him).

The sadistic and masochistic bdsm elements of this story was so well written that the bar has just be raised for all bdsm erotic/erotica i read in the future. Blevins just proved that you can write accurate BDSM without it being fantasy or pretty, and still keep it sexy and engaging.

Fantastic job! Very much a recommended read for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great characters, great story. Very hot! March 6, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I've been eagerly anticipating this book since reading SAFEWORD: RAINBOW last year (best predicament bondage scene, ever!). When it comes to S&M love stories, Candace Blevins knows her stuff. Her latest SAFEWORD: MATTE hits all the right buttons for my inner masochist. It gives a positive portrayal of a safe, sane and consensual S&M relationship. Yes, there are "loving sadists," and the book's hero, Ethan, is a swoon-worthy example.

I really liked Sam's complex character. When it comes to love and sex, she's in a bit of a dilemma. Sam's a tough and well-respected divorce attorney in Chattanooga, a champion martial arts fighter, and a sexual submissive. The men she dates from her dojo just don't do it for her. It's a turn off for her to be able to take her man down. It's also risky to be open about her kinks, because it might hurt her in her professional life. What's a submissive, discrete masochist to do?

Enter Ethan Levi. A six-and-a-half-foot heavyweight cage fighter. And a sadist dom. Sam decides to bend her "no fighters" rule, because after talking with him, she can't deny that they have compatible kinks. Communication about expectations and safe words is key. The chemistry between them is fierce. Ethan knows how to give her what she needs while challenging her submission.

SAFEWORD: MATTE is a well-written story with strong characters, and the BDSM scenes are off-the-charts hot. I would recommend this book to BDSM romance fans who appreciate heavier S&M. I give it 4˝ stars!
