Book Description

July 2004
Saffron Robes presents a spectacular view of the beauty and spirituality of the lives of Buddhist monks around the world. More than 70 extraordinary images of compassion, joy and understanding are linked by a common thread -- the saffron robe worn by the Buddhist monks.

Tilak Hettige takes the reader from the majestic mountains of Bhutan to the ancient temples of Cambodia, to the remote villages in Myanmar, and to the serene countryside of Sri Lanka. Along this spectacular journey we meet spiritual leaders from Dharamsala (the seat of Tibetan Buddhism), novice monks embracing the Theravadha Buddhism in Thailand, and veteran staid monks meditating in the lonely forests of West Virginia in the US.

Throughout the book, the story of the saffron robe is intertwined with simple explanations of Buddhist concepts and ceremonies. Tilak combines an intimate knowledge of Buddhism with a superb eye for composition and a fine sense of color. Explanatory notes on Buddhism provide non-Buddhists with an insight into one of the world’s most important religions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Saffron Robes, A Photo Essay, January 25, 2005
This review is from: Saffron Robes: A Photographic Essay on Buddhist Monks (Hardcover)
Recently, I have taken a keen interest to know more about the way
other people in Asia live their lives; particularly the way they
practice their religions. I was able to read this book, Saffron Robes,
and it gave me insight into how one becomes a monk, and the journey
that goes with it. Also, it gave me a glimpse of different places I
would definitely like to see for myself after seeing all the
great pictures that are inside the book.

This review is from: Saffron Robes: A Photographic Essay on Buddhist Monks (Hardcover)
This book, more than any other I have ever read, integrates the
spiritual practices of Buddhism into the way monks live their daily
lives. Through the author's display of photographs, one would be able
to fully appreciate the journey one has to take to be able to wear a
Saffron Robe.
