5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written.
I couldn't have asked for a better book. This book is about three young ladies and their lives. It starts out when they are teenagers and goes a bit of story line about each of them back and forth and from time to time others that are in their lives too. A lot happens in 600 some pages, and I won't go into details but love comes and goes, people move on, pass away, but...

2.0 out of 5 stars Failed Expectations
With all the hype, I was expecting a good, solid read.
The book is very episodic and skips over huge chunks of time. I am not a fan of this technique. I was looking forward to a good, comlex love story.
Some of the complexity is there and some of the writing is very good.
One problem I had is that I wasn't sure of the focus of the book. Was it Max and how...

I couldn't have asked for a better book. This book is about three young ladies and their lives. It starts out when they are teenagers and goes a bit of story line about each of them back and forth and from time to time others that are in their lives too. A lot happens in 600 some pages, and I won't go into details but love comes and goes, people move on, pass away, but friendships seem to be the rock in this book.

I have never been on the Eastern part of the world, so I loved all the descriptions of places. Some parts of the book were given in detail and then kind of forgotten, but I still enjoyed the book immensely. This is an author to keep your eye on. I look forward to reading Sundowners and hope she writes more.

I kept wondering throughout the book which character I was most like.. I liked bits and pieces of course about each one of them. I wonder if as females we always compare our lives to each other a bit.

Bravo this is a book you won't forget about for a long time! Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Page Turner, March 21, 2006
This review is from: Saffron Skies (Hardcover)
This book was an entertaining page turner! It's a story about three women who's adventures take them from London to Belfast to New York to Africa. A VERY intriguing portrayal of "elite" living, and the jealousy (warranted or not) that comes as a result. One percaution: Any man that is met throughout the course of the novel most likely will sleep with a female lead(although never too graphic!!). This may explain how a 600 page book is read so quickly!!! ;)

I really loved this book. It starts with young girls clear through their adulthood. And the images she creates are amazing. I took this book to work, and the other two employees that have read it so far, fell in love with it also. I can't wait to see what her next book is like

5.0 out of 5 stars Best I've read in a long time. . ., August 26, 2005
This review is from: Saffron Skies (Hardcover)
I hesitated spending money on a hard-cover book by an author I'd never heard of, but the price was well worth it. This is one of the best books I've read in a long while. I've passed it on to several friends, and they've loved it, too. When I first saw how thick the book was (over 600 pages), I didn't know if I'd get through the whole thing, but I couldn't put it down. I'm looking forward to Ms. Lokko's next tale.

Some of the complexity is there and some of the writing is very good.
One problem I had is that I wasn't sure of the focus of the book. Was it Max and how he affected everyone around him, for better or worse, or was the book about his daughter and her circle and how she, in some ways, breaks out of Max' circle.
Finally, the ending happened to quickly and left me unsatisfied. I had more questions than answers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!, September 17, 2005
This review is from: Saffron Skies (Hardcover)
This book is 600 pages but it reads very easy and quick!

The book reads very easy- in each chapter you read about all three main characters in separate little paragraphs, so you are kept completely upto date with each character as the story unfolds.

The story spans a time of 40 years with three main characters, Amber, Becky and Madeline. Amber is the daughter of a very wealthy man who escaped Nazi Germany during the war. Becky is from "plain" American folks, and befriends Amber, Amber loves Becky's home and Mother because she is the mothering loving Mother that Amber does not have at home. Her mother is an alcholic that drinks herself into a deep sleep.

Madeline is also from a war torn european country that is suffering from a war about religion. She also befriends Amber and Becky.

Like I said the book is over 600 pages but it read very quickly and it was extremely enjoyable!

I recommend this to everyone!

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't Stop Reading, February 21, 2006
This review is from: Saffron Skies (Hardcover)
One of the things that I think makes a truly great novel is character development. The fact that this book starts out when the characters are young girls and follows them until they have children and grandchildren of their own means that this book was FULL of character development. No matter what it is you're looking for, this book has it all: love, hate, jealousy, scandal, drugs, suspense, romance, friendship, etc... I would definitely reccommend it, you won't be able to put it down, i promise!

It was abridged and made absolutely no sense. It wasn't advertised as abridged. I wouldn't of bought it had I been informed it was abridged.

2.0 out of 5 stars Saffron Skies?, June 13, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Saffron Skies (Paperback)
This is my first Lesley Lokko book and I was expecting to be wowed, but wasn't. The blurb on the back of the book talks about two half-sisters falling in love with the same guy. That didn't happen. Instead the book focused on Amber, Becky, Madeline, and Amber's family members.

A lot happened in this book that was definitely out of the ordinary. It's not a light fluffy read, so be prepared for heavy material, some thought provoking, and some that may disgust you. I have to hand it to Lesley, she sure doesn't pull her punches.

Now that I know somewhat to expect, I won't be so surprised the next time I pick up a book by Lesley Lokko.

5.0 out of 5 stars COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN...., June 17, 2010
By
After getting through the first few chapters, and growing attached to the characters it quickly became a book I simply had a hard time putting down. I found a piece of myself (or someone I know) in each of the characters & couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen next with each of them... and was pleasantly surprise with what did! Not predictable & very "real".... LOVED IT!!!
