I purchased the Saga LC-10 LP guitar kit as a gift for my 11 year old son who expressed an interest in playing the guitar. After investigating the el cheapo guitar/amplifier combo packs I made the decision to purchase the Saga kit to hopefully provide something more robust than the low end guitars, and more importantly to teach my son all about the inner workings of a guitar.

This kit includes everything you need to start playing a guitar except for the amplifier. The downside is that the rats nest wiring harness which although easy to use provides lots of opportunities to generate electrical noise/buzz when connected to an amplifier. After doing some research I decided to start from scratch and upgrade the internal wiring, potentiometers, capacitors, and switches. I also purchased copper shielding which I installed in all of the cutouts and then grounded everything together. Although this effort added another $75-100 to the cost of the guitar it also made it much more enjoyable. I can crank the amplifier to the maximum and there is no buzzing or other noise from the guitar.

If you plan to add a colored lacquer finish as I did it will take several weeks before the guitar is ready to play because you need to allow the finish to dry between coats. If you are anxious to play you might want to consider a ready to go guitar.

Since I had no prior guitar experience I had to rely heavily on the many web resources dedicated to the building and setup of guitars. I even found one web site that had a much better set of instructions for building and more importantly setting up the guitar. In the end the information I gathered allowed me to use the basic Saga parts to build a guitar that is very functional, sounds and looks great, and gets lots of compliments from everybody who sees and hears it. My son is now happily making a lot of progress learning how to play the guitar using the books I ordered from Amazon.

It was packed very well. Nothing broken or chipped, all the pieces were there, and the instructions were helpful and informative.

I really took my time painting it and cutting the headstock into a custom design. It took me a month to complete what with all the sanding, coating, resanding, extra color and clear coats, and polishing.

Now you can put this guitar together right out of the box in about 30 minutes to an hour and have a working guitar, but who wants a plain old natural wood guitar when you can go crazy and make it into whatever you want? The body and neck come sealed, so you do not have to prep the wood or even use primer. It is ready to paint right out of the box. You even get a cord for your input jack, and they throw in a set of strings too.

You don't have to be a world renowned luthier to put together your own guitar from Saga. You don't even have to solder the wires, they are all plug in. You can remove the plug caps and solder them if you wish though. After assembling this guitar, you will learn all about guitar electronics and set up. I had to adjust the truss rod just a little bit, but it played great after that with an awesome action. And hey guess what, they even throw in an alan wrench with the truss rod. You get everything you need in one little box. Buy yours today, build you rown guitar, and be a REAL guitar hero.

3.0 out of 5 stars Free American, August 19, 2009

I ordered this kit from Amazon for something to do. It arrived in just a few days of the order. I did some internet research on this product, part fit, quality of parts, etc. I did a dry fit when I recieved it and found that the tuners were all for the same side. Also the wiring is not very good, try to re-soder some ends that you feel are questionable. If you want the wood grain to come out on the top of this guitar get out a grinder ! The sealer that they put on is about a 1/16 of an inch thick, if that stuff was paint I would have it on my car and never worry again about a rock chip ! Otherwise use Duplo-color automotive paint. The neck was a nice tight fit just like it should be. When you get this kit the neck will be tight, to install it lay the body down on a table or flat surface, line the neck up and push straight down. Since I needed new tuners and I had read to many times to count that SAGA is of no help I ordered my parts through Amazon. Gotoh tuners from Musicans Friend, Ernie Ball regular slinky's from Amazon, Graph Tech Tusq nut from Ant Hill Music, and all arrived in just a few days after order.
The neck had a little dip in it but it adjusted out just fine. The instructions are easy. I set it up the same as my Les Paul and to my surpise it sounds pretty damn good. So with the add on's my $215.00 kit guitar is worth about $375.00 and sound's like a $500.00 guitar. Have fun with it, it's a good product if you have some time and want to learn more about guitar building. If you don't then buy a guitar that's all done and ready to go for about the same investment.

Absolutely the best purchase I've ever made from amazon. This was an almost spiritual quest- creating my own personal instrument. The Saga kit was the gateway. Those who say that it was a difficult build either rushed in or did not use the tools available online to research a "good" build. The most fun you can possibly have. I cannot recommend this any further. If you have the time and the creativity I implore you to undertake this adventure.

This was fun and the end product is great! I did replace the Humbuckers with some Seymour Duncans, the machine head with Gotoh's and also the small 500K ohm pots with the quarter size instead of the cheap dime size. Very pleased with end product

I bought this guitar as a teaching aide for my grandson he had a guitar that needed a ton of work but was afraid to work on it, with this kit he learned how to finish a guitar and how the guitar works how to set it up. I was surprised with the quality of the entire package the electronics the pick up although not the P 90 for the less paul they were way better then what I expected. The guitar when taking your time putting it together you end up with a nice working guitar and a good education on how to build one. The only down side was the fretting very large and only a inch and a half nut. all in all it turns out to be a quality instrument worth what you paid for it and a lot of fun. Thanks

1.0 out of 5 stars Electrical parts broke, missing, poor quality, November 12, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Saga LC-10 LP Style Electric Guitar Kit (Electronics)
My son, who is an avid guitar player, purchased this guitar with his own money because he wanted to learn how to make an electric guitar. The body and neck were fine, but the kit was missing parts (the socket where you place your cable jack), and several wires literally crumbled during construction. In addition, several of the guitar strings were too short, and they could not be strung onto the guitar.

We did look it over when we first opened the box, but did not actually try the strings onto the guitar until after the paint job. All the wires appeared to be present, so he did not actually work with the electrical wires until he had painted the guitar. Thus when they crumbled, we could not return the guitar. So, now we can't return the guitar, pretty much none of the electric parts and wiring work, and he will have to buy all the faulty pieces. We should have returned it when it was missing the cable jack, but we did think that piece could be easily purchased locally.

This kit is not worth the money. The quality inspection of the parts was totally absent.

3.0 out of 5 stars You Get What You Pay For, November 20, 2010
This review is from: Saga LC-10 LP Style Electric Guitar Kit (Electronics)
If you come into this not knowing how a guitar works or what you're doing, don't buy this product. Go to a book store, buy a book on guitars and how they work, and sit there and read about headstocks, humbuckers, ect. The instructions can only do so much if you don't know how a guitar even works. I've been playing and maintaining my guitars for about ten years now, and I know for a fact that if you try to come into this project knowing nothing, you're not going to have a satisfying experience. This guitar is as good as your knowledge on guitars. I think for under 200 dollars you're getting a spectacular deal, but a good prebuilt guitar comes in at a range of 400 to 1,000 dollars, and anything under that is usually in the beginner range, and is going to have a lot of static and subpar quality parts. My recommendation is you buy a new humbucker, tuners, and fix up the wiring (solder if you can!), before you engage in this project. The parts included are beginner parts, and with them, you're only going to get a basic quality product. Most of these extra parts if you bought them online would range from 6 dollars to 60 dollars, and you'll be getting much better quality and sound out of them. The neck and body are made of wood, and as with the nature of wood, it's going to expand depending on climate, and possibly won't fit. Get ready to sand if needed. To sum this whole thing up, the 200 odd dollars you're paying is for the wooden neck and body, which is shaped in a Les Paul style which usually pre-built would come in at around 1,000 dollars. This is a great deal in my opinion, but please, come into this with a little bit of research behind you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really nice kit, October 14, 2011
This review is from: Saga LC-10 LP Style Electric Guitar Kit (Electronics)
I really like this kit I got it today and put it together to see how good it was considering the other reviews said there were a few problems. The problems were the humenbackers have some feedback amd the pickguard doesn't fit in correctly but I like it better with out it. Looks better. Fore the price this is a good way to learn the insides of the guitar and if u want, u can sell it and get a good deal if u change the humenbackers.

5.0 out of 5 stars One cool project!, May 18, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Saga LC-10 LP Style Electric Guitar Kit (Electronics)
I had previously purchased the Saga stratocaster kit, so I was eager to get hold of the Les Paul kit. After receiving it in the mail today, I must say that I think this particular kit is of an even better quality than the strat. The body, neck and fretboard are all of high quality, and it comes prepped with sanding sealer; all you have to do is paint it. Additionally, the white binding on the body and neck gives it a very cool look. The electronics come with metal tabs that plug into each other, but of course, I'll be nipping those clips off and soldering everything instead. Another cool feature is that the top portion of the headstock is a bit oversized, which gives you the opportunity to cut it into any shape you want. For the finish on mine, I'll probably be doing a clear blue lacquer. One thing I should mention is that the strings that come with it suck, so don't even waste your time putting them on. Get yourself a good set of Ernie Ball slinkys instead. I'm sure the pickups sound excellent, but someday I may install a set of EMG 81's in it. If you love guitars and are looking for a top quality project, this is the one!
