Since its publication in 1996, The Sagebrush State has served as the text for the required course on Nevada’s history and constitution given at the state’s colleges and universities. The third edition of this work is updated through 2005 to include information on the elections of 2002 and 2004 and two very controversial sessions of the legislature.

The full text of the state constitution is provided for reference in an appendix and includes extensive annotations that note and explain amendments and other changes made to the original 1864 document.

About the Author

Michael W. Bowers is professor of political science and public law, and Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He has published many scholarly articles as well as numerous academic pieces.

This book is for a class I have to take and I wasn't expecting to enjoy reading it, but so far (only a couple chapters in so far), this book is really interesting and well-written. It covers a lot of the early history in the first couple of chapters and illustrates the stuggle Nevada had to become an officially recognized state. I think its also interesting that the Civil War had an impact on the decision to grant statehood - I had never thought about the connection before now. The few chapters I've been able to get to so far are surprisingly good and even entertaining.

The book is fine. I ordered it for a government class I am taking in Nevada, so I would not classify it as a purchase I 'wanted' to make, but it arrived in fine condition, quickly and is exactly what I ordered.

I have to agree with the other reviewer as the book is not all together boring but, I would not have chose it on my own accord. I did buy this book for a mandatory class on Nevada history. The author did make the history of Nevada interesting. I am going to keep it.
