Light hearted adventure romp...good fun - DVD please,
By Darren Harrison "DVD collector and reviewer" (Washington D.C.) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Sahara [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I saw this movie many years ago on television.
It's a 1984 movie that was inspired by the disappearance of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's son in a trans-Sahara rally, Brooke Sheilds plays Dale who enrolls in a trans-Africa auto race following the death of her father before being abducted by an Arabian sheik. Directing the movie is Andrew V. McLaglen who also directed some other very entertaining adventure movies such as THE WILD GEESE, THE SEA WOLVES and one of my all-time favorite action adventure movies FFOLKES (Known as NORTH SEA HIJACK in Europe). This movie seems lost between trying to appeal to both the RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK crowd and the Harlequin romantic drama fans and is somewhat successful on both counts,. Still some great imagery and beautiful photography are the definite high points in addition to a very appealing looking Sheilds. Leave your brain at the door and sit back for some good old fashioned popcorn choming fun. I really do like this adventure romance movie. Plus its great to see Sir John Mills in one of his later roles. Lets hope it arrives on DVD one day soon!

I enjoyed the funny antics, the mystery, the adventures, and the racing in the desert of Saudi Arabia. It made you feel like a noble nomad of the desert. The actors were awesome!! It was definitely worth having, especially for the 80's. Old and very interesting to watch over and over, again.

This movie was light and entertaining. The scenery was lovely and the acting was good. Lambert Wilson the love interest for Brooke Shields is gorgeous and someone I wouldn't mind being caught in Saudi Arabia with.

Thank Goodness For Netflix,

I watched this movie as a young girl. Now 50, I still love it! It just so happened I decided to search Netflix. Never dreaming it was there, and OMG there it was! I have watched it on my laptop several times since. The scenery is so beautiful. It fulfills the "Captured by a hansome Sheik" fantasy of mine! Brooke is beautiful in this movie and I too wonder what ever happened to Lambert Wilson! Anyone who is a love story fan will be swept away as I always am whenever I watch it.

Romance and action 80s style!,
This review is from: Sahara [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I watched this when I was 13-years-old back in the 80s and it was one of those dramas that created quite an impression on me back then (I was also into those Harlequin romances back then). Well, thanks to Netflix, I was able to revisit this old favorite, and even though it is now dated, I still loved it! The storyline is very similar to a Harlequin romance plot - beautiful young heiress Dale (played by a lovely and young Brooke Shields) decides to disguise herself as a man and compete in a race in the Saharan desert. Along the way, she gets kidnapped by an Arab thug, and is later 'claimed' by the thug's handsome nephew, a sheik named Jaffar (played by a dashing Lambert Wilson). Well, the sheik is smitten by Dale's beauty and fiery temperament (she's called Aisha, the blue-eyed demon by the tribe), and Dale in turn finds herself falling for the dashing sheik.
This is definitely a light romance-adventure - there is no real character development, nor an exploration of the clash of cultures. The two leads share a genuine chemistry that sizzles on-screen (whatever happened to Lambert Wilson?). I would love to add this to my DVD collection if only for nostalgic purposes, but it is not available. Good thing Netflix has this available for online streaming. There is another drama titled "Sahara" which was also screened as a mini-series back in the late 80s, and I can't seem to find it anywhere. The score was haunting, and it was a similar romance-adventure. These shows sure bring back fond memories for me - they don't make them like they used to!
