Saharan Boy is an interesting coming-of-age tale set in the Western Sahara circa 1980. Psychological overtones meld with exciting adventures to make this novel a pleasurable read. I especially appreciated the author's sharp insight and knowledge of the area's people and customs.

I would highly recommend this novel to teenagers looking for a good read! Saharan Boy is a classic teen "coming of age" story that addresses the universal questions faced by all adolescents: "Who am I? How do I become a man? How can I make a difference in the world? Will anybody listen to me?" With lots of action and adventure thrown in, teens will be hooked!

By A Customer
This review is from: Saharan Boy (Paperback)
This young-adult novel, written for adults as well, follows the travels of a Moroccan boy searching for his father who is a prisoner of war in the disputed area of the Western Sahara. This novel, about a boy's coming of age in the face of poverty and war, is full of details of Arab culture and life in Morocco. At the same time, Hamid's journeys take the reader through Morocco from the city of Fes to the Sahara Desert.

About a Saharan Boy, March 17, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Saharan Boy (Paperback)
Richard Bellamy has written an interesting, well informed narrative of the life of a young boy growing into manhood in a very different time and place. This book can give the young reader a real sense of the many historical events occurring in Morocco during the 1980's, and how they shaped the life of Hamid, the Saharan Boy.
