Excellent - delivers more than it promises!,

The title of this book is very modest!It is actually probably the very best resource available on any of the West Papuan languages spoken in North Halmahera of the North Maluku region, Indonesia. Not only is it an excellent Sahu-Indonesian-English dictionary, it includes English-Sahu and Indonesian-Sahu finderlists at the back, too. The Indonesian translations of Sahu words are not only given as the standard Indonesian equivalents, but those in the regional lingua franca, North Malukan Malay, too. For the latter dialect, this book may just be the best reference available. And the information on grammar is very detailed and thorough. It may not fill a separate book, but is definitely more than just a mere "sketch". The intro chapter has interesting information on the various dialects of the Sahu language, and of previous research undertaken in the area. It also has a good map showing the distribution of all West Papuan languages in the region, and another one of the Sahu language area, showing all villages with their linguistic affiliations clearly marked. I can only wish (in vain, no doubt) such excellent publications were available on other languages on this region, too!
