Book Description

May 1984
Go, Go, Said the Bird adds new insight to a much-fabled locale--the Deep South during the sixties. Amid a cast of characters whose actions and ideas pound through the novel's pages, it is essentially the story of a young man, Bird Lassiter--a black boy with white skin. Trying to accept himself for what he cruelly learns he really is from his white "betters"--the Coy Watsons, the Klan--he suffers the derision not only of whites, but of his own race as well. In his own attempts to "pass," he is unable to come to terms with himself, his race, or those who would protect or destroy him. In the savage climax, Bird must at last make his dire choice.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

A Lost Novel: Go, Go, Said the Bird was published in 1984 by Vanguard, to immediate praise and acclaim. Vanguard simultaneously underwent a corporate shakeup, and Anne Stallworth's novel disappeared without a trace. The book was essentially not distributed. Copies were found later in a warehouse, but the damage had been done. The book has been out of print from 1984 until now. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!, September 14, 2007

This review is from: Go, Go, Said the Bird (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful book. The characters are so like small town people in rural Alabama. Seeing the Civil Rights movement through the eyes of a mixed race young man was moving.
