A great blue water sailor who could even swim.
Jeffrey Tischler
Slocums love for the sea is never in doubt, and he conveys the images of his voyage, from the serenity to the tempest, with awe and passion.
J. Whalton
Even though this book was written in 1900, it captivated my attention.
Linda

This is a fantastic tale - no question about that. Please note however that this version does not include any of the original illustrations, which are very helpful when in comes to maps of the voyage. I wound up purchasing the eNotated version and much prefer it to this one.

Not a bad story overall. Slocum's style is witty and entertaining. The stories are great. It's a little dry in some places but I think that's probably due to the story being 120 years old. A good read, and almost required, if you are interested in sailing, long voyages, naval history and the like.

Always a great read. Loaned my hard copy out a few years ago never to be seen again. Nothing to do but replace it. Slocum's account of his journey gives the reader a vivid insight into what it must have been like to set out on a circumnavigation nearly 120 years ago without any modern support facilities.

I have always wanted to read this book having so often dreamt of doing some serious long distance sailing myself - but never having had the courage to put my dreams into practice. Joshua Slocum's story is that of a truly amazing man who is resourceful, has incredible stamina, is truly courageous under the most adverse weather conditions and to cap it all obviously had a wonderful manner about him that encouraged so many people around the world to fete him and assist him in so many ways at his many ports of call.
My only criticism of reading the book on our Kindle is that that device does not allow images such as line plans of the "Spray" to be magnified along with the text. A small complaint and not one that impaired my enjoyment of the book and the racing of my imagination as I followed Mr Slocum across the oceans.

wonderful old school book - interestingly written for a great adventure. Built his boat then sailed it around the world - with old school support from British sailors and governors every-where.
Loved it ...... and a wood burning stove for cooking & coffee!
