Editorial Reviews

From Booklist
Does sailing mean spending big money? It does if by sailing you mean a 70-foot yacht complete with crew. But as journalist and avid sailor Johnson has learned, sailing can be affordable for those of us not in the country-club set. Johnson examines the do's and don'ts of buying, renting, and chartering sailboats, purchasing the right gear, and provisioning and docking the boat. All information is aimed at doing things as inexpensively as possible. Johnson provides tips and advice on getting started in sailing and includes a list of associations and clubs for the novice; programs specifically designed for women, children, and the disabled; and online resources. Detailed and pragmatic, this primer is indispensable for those without deep pockets who want to be on the open sea. Brian McCombie

This book is nearly worthless. From the title, one would reasonably assume that there would be discussion of specific good-value boats or perhaps off-the-beaten-track places to look for cheap moorage, but no. A large chunk of the book is wasted on suggestions of where the reader can obtain sailing lessons (the Red Cross apparently) followed by handy suggestions for how to learn on-the-job, so to speak (ask people that have boats--and now you've gotten the Cliff Notes for chapters 1-5). Oh, I forgot one juicy morsel of knowledge: magazines often offer discounted subscriptions!

The only useful information I gleaned from this book stems from a list of a handful of used and discounted gear stores in various coastal locations throughout the U.S. listed in chapter 11. If you want what this book should have been, try Daniel Spurr's Your First Sailboat : How to Find and Sail the Right Boat for You.
