Editorial Reviews

Review

"The details of Paul and Kelly's journey will bring the reader aboard the roller coaster ups and downs of the cruising life, the seemingly endless frustrations mitigated by unforgettable friendships, joy and awe that make it all so worthwhile, an experience of a lifetime. Here is an inspirational couple who recognized an opening in their lives and seized a moment leading to the kinds of memories that only a life at sea can bring . . . with the ultimate reward being the realization of the elusive dream that motivated them to leave in the first place..." - Tanai Aebi, author of "Maiden Voyage"

"Sailing to Jessica.is a sailing adventure book bookended by infertility and adoption...Kelly and Paul had struggled with unexplained infertility for years...Rather than cope using the tried-and-true methods of therapy, more infertility treatment, wine, or chocolate, they decided to sail around the world.  Kelly paints such a vivid picture with her words that I...lived their adventure-celebrating their successful passages across the ocean and suffering their disappointment with a failed IVF attempt in New Zealand...it's a great read." - Dawn Davenport, Creating A Family

"Kelly and Paul had a big, hairy, audacious goal: to have kids. Only they couldn't. So they did the next craziest thing: cruising. (So what if they didn't know how to sail--details, details.) Thrilling and honest, this book recounts their journey from the eastern US across the Pacific. It describes their adventures--good, bad, ugly--and reminds us how abandoning our planned route sometimes takes us exactly where we need to go." - Janna Cawrse Esarey, author of The Motion of the Ocean: 1 Small Boat, 2 Average Lovers and a Woman's Search for the Meaning of Wife

Sailing to Jessica is an inspired commentary on the strength of the human spirit, a testimony to love, and the joy of exploration. For anyone who wants to grab life with both hands, leap out of their comfort zone, and imagine the possibilities out there; this wonderful debut novel ticks every box. It is part memoir, part exceptional travel adventure (with amazing detail), part love story. After reading this, don't be surprise if you feel just a little tempted to jump on a sailboat and sail the stormy seas to the nearest tropical island.

One night the author and her husband, Paul, stand on their boat watching the trail of phosphorescence churned up in the wake of their yacht, the hardy Cherokee Rose. That was the metaphor of this memoir; magical yet real markers illuminating a path to an unexpected destination. Kelly and Paul, frustrated by failed attempts at IVF and other stresses set out to sail the world on their 42-foot boat. Sailing to Jessica is not just an adventure tale though there is plenty of adventure to be found. It is a story of a love that survives childlessness, a voyage of discovery and a look at the prosaic yet mysterious forces that lead them to a totally unexpected and precious destination.

I am a couch potato fascinated by adventure stories. From tales of mountain climbers to desert expeditions and super-cave spelunking, I've read them all. So, when a friend sent me this book I was game. And I was not disappointed. After all, I hadn't read a good sailing adventure...ever. This book did not disappoint. It was interesting to see the changes in Kelly and Paul, from the people who started on this adventure to the people who completed it. Talk about real-life character development. Ultimately, this book is a love story, between the couple of course, but most importantly between them and their daughter Jessica who might very well have been the reason for the voyage in the first place though they did not know it when they set off into the sunset.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about life on the high seas, anyone interested in true love stories and anyone like me, would rather sit safely on a couch and read about *others* almost dying in deadly storms.

I loved it. How do you fit adventure into a life you think is routine. Can you make a change, any change? Very inspiring and thought provoking book with a wonderful finish.

If you have ever entertained the idea of sailing around the world, this book is a must read. It certainly spells out all the warts and wrinkles of such a journey. I read this in the e-version and so did not see any of the pictures. The text is interesting if only to understand what can go wrong when two people set out in a sailboat to circumnavigate the globe. It's a short book but a good book--try it.

When life doesn't work as you plan, what do you do? So many times I have dreamed what I would do if I had the money, the time, etc. Kelly and Paul didn't dream. They did it!! Their sailing adventures kept me on the edge of my seat. Following their life changing experiences captured me. Finding out how they ended up with everything they had dreamed of amazed me.

A friend of mine gave me this book to read, and when I saw that it involved sailing I have to be honest : I inwardly groaned. I am not the audience for this kind of book. Even so, I read it and am so glad I did. There was a lot to enjoy. Part travelogue, part memoir, part craziness (they sailed around the world without actually knowing how to sail!) Sailing to Jessica holds nothing back. Not only are Kelly and Paul on the ride of their life in their sailboat, their relationship and desire to build a family has as many ups and downs as a Pacific storm. They are maddening, touching, and brave. We cringe, we bite our nails, we cry and we laugh. A book about the human spirit, luck, fate and the things we do with our backs to the wall.

Who hasn't had the fantasy of going off on a great adventure? This couple dreamed of sailing around the world. And--though they had NEVER SAILED---off they went. Inspired by the approach of middle age and grieving over their childless state, they leapt, against all advice, from secure jobs to a dangerous endeavor that led them to unimagined excitement, and peril.

The book will have you lusting after the exotic locales they visit, marveling at some of the colorful island eccentrics they take up with, and hanging on for dear life with them as they encounter the inevitable sailing catastrophes. The ending is unexpected, as their journey ended with multiple surprises for the family and for their boat. I loved this fast-paced book, perfect for dreamers and adventurers of all sorts.
