The two have extensively sailed the West Coast from Canada to Mexico and Matts has written extensively as a freelance writer for multiple nautical magazines. In their new book, the retired couple offers suggestions on how to find the right used boat--drawing from their own experiences--from an extensive restoration to a shakedown cruise.
Also chronicled are the nuances of moorings and marinas; navigation; storm tactics; common-sense seamanship; short and long-term cruising; and matters of personal health, safety and on-board ambiance and comfort--all geared toward retirees and seniors.
The Djoses currently sail a trailerable 26-foot Balboa and a Mariner 31 ketch, which is moored in San Pedro, Calif. --Soundings Magazine
Earning the golden Sail: It is the goal of many of us--retiring from the rat race, buying a sailboat, and sailing off into the sunset. But the questions loom large. What type of boat? Where do we sail? How will we manage? These are all questions SAILING Magazine contributor Matts Djos and his wife, Jeanine, faced when he retired in 2006, and his search for answers is recounted in his new book, "Sailing Out of Retirement: Living the Dream."
Starting with a trailerable Balboa 26, Matts and Jeanine move up to a Mariner 31 ketch, which they restore and fit out for retirement cruising. Some of the chapters have appeared previously in SAILING Magazine and will be familiar to readers, but they've been updated for the book. For retirees and cruisers of all ages, the book will serve as a guide and case study of one couple's endeavor to live the dream. --Sailing Magazine, May 2011
In a nation of aging baby boomers, this self-published volume targets an often-ignored niche: senior sailors. The crux of the book is a primer based on the septuagenarian author's experiences gleaned when, after retirement, he and his wife bought a Mariner 31 ketch and went cruising. Djos advises on choosing and buying a pre-owned boat, refitting, selecting a marina, heavy-weather tactics, and medical issues for older cruisers. --Cruising World

An Inspiring and Practical Guide for Aspiring and Experienced Senior Sailors,
This review is from: Sailing Out of Retirement: Living the Dream (Paperback)
This is a wonderful book! One I will surely be giving as gifts to many of my Boomer friends who have even slightest interest in sailing. A combination of poetic philosophical musings (in the intro) and very practical advice on buying a boat, outfitting it and finally, the joys and challenges of sailing it!
Chapter 1 is an exciting and harrowing account of a crossing in the Sea of Cortez which, fortunately, through hard-earned experience, a well-outfitted boat, common sense and some good luck the Djoses survived intact and ready to write this book. The Djoses are a couple who celebrate the joys of sailing together thereby inspiring armchair sailors to set sail themselves. Highly recommended.

This is a very well written book. I just loved the personal stories. The book explains how to choose, refit, do sea trails and find moorage for your boat. It was very enlightening. I'm not ready for retirement yet but found the information useful. It is obvious that the Djos's are very knowledgable and capable sailors. I would highly recommend this book to any one at any age.I can't wait to read their next book.
