5.0 out of 5 stars An Inspiring and Practical Guide for Aspiring and Experienced Senior Sailors
This is a wonderful book! One I will surely be giving as gifts to many of my Boomer friends who have even slightest interest in sailing. A combination of poetic philosophical musings (in the intro) and very practical advice on buying a boat, outfitting it and finally, the joys and challenges of sailing it!

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money....
I am a trailer sailor, about 10 years and have some sailing experience in the Sea of Cortez as well as San Fransisco Bay. Mostly on NM lakes on a 26' boat. The book was too short for the the money paid. Wish I had my $9.99 back. The writing was OK, I enjoyed some of it (maybe 30% was in stories). Mostly a re-hash of common sense so if you have any sailing experience...

5.0 out of 5 stars An Inspiring and Practical Guide for Aspiring and Experienced Senior Sailors, April 14, 2011
This review is from: Sailing Out of Retirement: Living the Dream (Paperback)
This is a wonderful book! One I will surely be giving as gifts to many of my Boomer friends who have even slightest interest in sailing. A combination of poetic philosophical musings (in the intro) and very practical advice on buying a boat, outfitting it and finally, the joys and challenges of sailing it!

Chapter 1 is an exciting and harrowing account of a crossing in the Sea of Cortez which, fortunately, through hard-earned experience, a well-outfitted boat, common sense and some good luck the Djoses survived intact and ready to write this book.

The Djoses are a couple who celebrate the joys of sailing together thereby inspiring armchair sailors to set sail themselves. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read for retirees, April 11, 2011
This review is from: Sailing Out of Retirement: Living the Dream (Paperback)
The Djoses have provided a first-rate guide and narrative on their personal experience searching out and buying a boat, refittinig it, finding a moorage, sea trials, and the pleasures of cruising from a personal, senior perspective.

A must read for seniors and boomers who are thinking about sailing and retiring and wondering what it involves

This is a very well written book. I just loved the personal stories. The book explains how to choose, refit, do sea trails and find moorage for your boat. It was very enlightening. I'm not ready for retirement yet but found the information useful. It is obvious that the Djos's are very knowledgable and capable sailors. I would highly recommend this book to any one at any age.I can't wait to read their next book.

The book was too short for the the money paid. Wish I had my $9.99 back. The writing was OK, I enjoyed some of it (maybe 30% was in stories). Mostly a re-hash of common sense so if you have any sailing experience don't bother, really, listen to the others. If you have never been on a sailboat, maybe you might like it, but only if you don't have a clue.

If you're fond of flowery, over-written prose, you'll love this book. (Yeah, the sea is beautiful....we get that!!) On the other hand, if you're looking for useful tips on living aboard a sailboat during your retirement years, you'd get more useful information from an AARP magazine article.

While I enjoyed seeing evidence of someone actually out there living the dream, I found the narrative a little thin.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too simple, June 28, 2011

Perhaps a good book for someone who knows NOTHING about sailing or buying a boat... but if you have experience, this book offers nothing. Also, the author seems to be periodically smitten with his own use of high-falutin' language... If you enjoy creative writing, you might enjoy this book, and if you are a novice to the sailing world, it does provide good, basic info. To us, it was a disappointment.

2.0 out of 5 stars It is short, April 10, 2011
On my opinion the title should be "My criterias for buying a boat after retirement". Don't expect to read about life experience because on that you will have a week on a boat and nothing more.
