Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

McNitt imposingly covers the history of not only yachting but, reaching back to the days when sail-training vessels were first-line warships, also sail training at Annapolis. Sail training lapsed between 1909 and the period just before World War II but has been steadily expanded since. The academy's midshipmen are now sailing widely and well in everything from dinghies to ocean racers. McNitt provides a chronology of events, both literary and graphic portraits of notable ships (the yacht America and "Old Ironsides" among them), sketches of major Annapolis yachtsmen, discussions of the political infighting behind various phases of the sailing revival, and some adventures and misadventures of sailing midshipmen. There is probably demand sufficient for only one book on this subject, and retired admiral and yachtsman McNitt meets it admirably for the purposes of both naval and yachting collections. This review is from: Sailing at the U.S. Naval Academy: An Illustrated History (Hardcover)
I was definitely amazed at the extraordinary bargain that this purchase represented. The book was in excellent condition. In addition it was a copy signed by the author and dedicated to an officer at the Naval Academy. Furthermore, it was sold at a price that was far lower than the "new" price despite clearly being a collector's copy. This was a gift to my son, a midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy, who had just been told that he had made the final cut to join the USNA Sailing Team (only 12 plebes out of more than 130 plebe applicants). Fortuitously, it arrived in time to give it to him on the day that he heard he had made the team. The seller underestimated the quality of the book and was right on time for its delivery. NO complaints --- just praise.
