"All year long, the dairy cows/would stand...and graze...and chew./They truly were contented cows-/except for little Moo. // Moo watched the field of waving wheat,/and wished for ocean swells./She sniffed the freshness of the grass,/but wished for ocean smells." 3.0 out of 5 stars Five stars for the illustrations; two stars for the clumsy, syntax-deficient writing
My kids really like this book -- it's original and engaging. Having said that -- I often make up my own words to the pictures because the original words are so awful in places. In order to preserve a rigid rhyme scheme, Wheeler mixes up verb tenses, tosses out definite articles, and generally makes a chopped salad out of the English language in her attempts at wit...

This review is from: Sailor Moo: Cow at Sea (Hardcover)
"All year long, the dairy cows/would stand...and graze...and chew./They truly were contented cows-/except for little Moo. // Moo watched the field of waving wheat,/and wished for ocean swells./She sniffed the freshness of the grass,/but wished for ocean smells." And so Moo packs her bucket and bell and leaves the farm to meet her destiny at sea. She's first employed as a galley cook on a feline fishing boat, promising fresh milk each day to pay her way. But when disaster strikes and she's swept overboard, her sea-cow cousins, the manatees, rescue Moo just in the nick of time, depositing her safely on the deck of ruthless, Red Angus' pirate ship. "Red Angus gazed into her eyes./His heart began to warm./In Moo he'd seen his dairy queen/and now he must reform." Content at last, Moo has finally found adventure and true love on the high seas..... Lisa Wheeler is back with another clever and witty picture book, and those who were charmed by her previous works, Sixteen Cows and Wool Gathering: A Sheep Family Reunion will lead a stampede to get Sailor Moo: Cow At Sea. Her marvelously engaging text begs to be read aloud, and is filled with rhyme, rhythm, silly cow puns and wordplay. Illustrator, Ponder Goembel's bold, colorful, and expressive artwork sparkles with endearing characters, humor, and captivating, eye-catching detail. Perfect for youngsters 3-7, Sailor Moo: Cow At Sea is definitely one of 2002's best and brightest, and is sure to be an instant favorite at your house. Kudos to Lisa Wheeler on another winner!

My 3.5 year old & I first checked this one out from the library. We've since checked it out at least two more times... time to buy our own!! We both enjoy the wonderful & catchy poetry/music. And the illustrations are awesome!! You, of course, need to use your best pirate voice in some places; aaarrrrrgggghhhhh!!!! It's an owner to pass down for your children's children...

This review is from: Sailor Moo: Cow at Sea (Hardcover)
I just checked this book out from the library and my son and I LOVE it so much I'm now ordering it from Amazon. I'm also getting another copy to give as a gift for a friend's son who is also turning 5 years old. I have now found a book I enjoy reading to my child as much as I enjoy reading "Oliva" to him. It's a winner!

5.0 out of 5 stars Shiver me timbers!, February 11, 2005
This review is from: Sailor Moo: Cow at Sea (Hardcover)
Being mom to a 2 year old, I've read a gazillion books. Some are tolerable the first 5 times and some are outright annoying and get "lost" after the first read. This book, however, is my FAVORITE. I am the one always begging if we can read this book. I've recommended it to all my friends and will probably buy a copy for birthday/Christmas gifts, etc. It's just a wonderful book and I can't wait to return our library copy and purchase one of our very own!

I've read it to my daughter (she's 23), my husband and, of course, my grandchildren. We all loved it. Maybe because we own cows, but I think it's the talent of Lisa Wheeler's rhymes we enjoy the most. And the illustrations are wonderful too. You can even see to hairs on Moo's face. Don't miss this book.

I've been looking for fun books to read to my 18 mo son and found a gem with "Sailor Moo". The rhythm, the humor, and the story are wonderful. This is a book you won't get tired of reading over and over (like many of the "bestsellers" out there!) This book is well worth the money 100x over!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Lisa Wheeler Delight!, May 21, 2003

"Sailor Moo: Cow at Sea" is another delightful picture book by Lisa Wheeler. This wonderful flowing rhyme tells a wonderful story of the pursuit of dreams, adventure, pirates and romance. Like Lisa's other books "Turk and Runt" and "Wool Gathering, A Sheep Family Reunion", she catches you up in her rhyme and makes you believe it is so. Lisa's sense of humor will make the adults giggle. This book is a must read for everyone young and old. Ponder Goembel was the perfect choice to illustrate this beautiful book.

5.0 out of 5 stars AMUSING FOR ALL AGES!, August 11, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Sailor Moo: Cow at Sea (Hardcover)
This children's book is well written and fun for both the kids and the grown-ups who read it to them. The puns, of which the editorial review reveals too many, are actually artfully slipped into the story and are clever, not irritating. Your kids probably won't get most of the wordplay, but will likely sense your enjoyment! This book is a fast read, yet you get a wonderful little love story thrown in, as well as a high seas adventure. The bold pictures with details that enrich and deepen the storyline, complete this book as a must have. I highly recommend this book. I know I will be giving it out as a gift to many children in the future!
