Based on the Japanese comic books, this two-part story introduces viewers to 14-year-old Serena's millennium-ago past as moon princess. Queen Serenity, the mother Serena/Sailor Moon doesn't remember, reappears to guide her daughter through a vision of what was, in "The Past Returns." Sailor Moon learns the sad fate of her family and civilization at the hands of the evil Queen Beryl's army, as well as the source of her curious connection with Darien. Fueled by her knowledge, she and four other scouts fight Queen Beryl and her Doom & Gloom Girls with renewed vigor in "Day of Destiny." Her cohorts are eventually all captured, leaving Sailor Moon to fight the mean queen one-on-one. The teenage superheroine is victorious, of course, banishing Beryl back to the Negaverse, freeing her friends, and subsequently forgetting her trip into the past--for her own good and that of the future of the WB television series from which this 41-minute video originates. For girls 6 and up. --Kimberly Heinrichs

From the back cover

Serena, an ordinary 14-year old, discovers that she is really SAILOR MOON, a superhero with an extraordinary past that goes back 1,000 years! But the evil forces she escaped on the Moon have followed her, and each day Serena must battle them to save Earth! The Past Returns the world as we know it is poised for destruction by the Negaverse. During SAILOR MOON's brave battle against the forces of evil, her mother Queen Serenity returns and takes her back 1,000 years to a place that is filled with secrets that answer the questions of the future! Day of Destiny. In a last-ditch effort to win her war, the ominous Queen Beryl dispatches the sinister Doom & Gloom Girls to systematically destroy each and every one of the Sailor Scouts, in the explosive conclusion to this adventure!

2.0 out of 5 stars A big disappointment compared to the Japanese episodes, September 9, 2000

There were so many changes to "Day of Destiny". Did you know that it was actually 2 episodes rolled into one?! Here are some differences: When Jupiter is suspended in the air, the DD Girls electrocute her to death, and Jupiter manages to kill two of them before she DIES. In the English version, they show the DD girls taking her away, as if "capturing" her, however she is electrocuted to death in the Japanese version. A scene is also cut when Sailor Mercury slaps the hysterical Sailor Moon. Then, instead of the DD girls carrying Mercury away in that boulder, like in the English episode, they heat up the boulder and literally boil Mercury to death in the Japanese version. Next, instead of them capturing Sailor Venus, they bring her down beneath the ice and torture her. Venus then hits one of the DD girls point blank with her Venus Crescent Beam, killing the DD girl, and herself. Instead of Mars being captured, she is brought into an ice cavern and tortured. She manages to kill the last 2 DD girls and then, yep you guessed it, DIES. Then the spirits of the slain Scouts give Moon some words of wisdom, and the episode ends. In the next episode, Serena confronts Beryl, only to find out Darien is under her power. Serena, however, manages to get Darien back, but Beryl kills him shortly after. Now, the finla battle scene. Serena emerges as Princess Serenity and fights Queen Metallia (who is using Beryl's body) and gets the help from the dead scouts, and manages to kill Beryl. See what you're missing out on, kids?

5.0 out of 5 stars Out Of This World!, November 3, 1999

Those two episodes were my favortie in the whole series and set a nice beginning for Sailor Moon R. I liked when Queen Beryle transformed into Queen Mettalia and when the scouts defeated her. I think "Carry On" is the best song ever!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Queen, Bad Queen Review, July 20, 2000

This video was ok. Only ok. Wanna know why? Because the subtitled version of these videos are sooo much better than the dubbed. Did you know that Day of Destiny was actually a two-parter and the dub made it into one? Did you know that the ending of Day O Destiny isn't the WHOLE ending! It's sooo much better to just buy the Subtitled Version! Don't get me wrong I love that we can get these dubbed episodes in North America but COME ON PEOPLE! -Sailor Sun
