5.0 out of 5 stars Whether or not this is a bootleg in question, but either way: Get This Product!, July 31, 2008
This review is from: Sailor Moon Limited Edition Box Set II (DVD)
Whether or not this box set is a bootleg is in question. There are copyright warnings and labels all over, yet there are no copyright dates, so hmm . . . But since Amazon is selling this product, I seriously doubt that this is a bootleg.
That being said, buying this is completely worth your while. This box set holds: the three movies, the 4th season (SuperS), and the 5th season (Sailor Stars). All of this is uncut and unedited.
If you are a diehard fan of the series, I reccomend you buy this box set because it contains the fifth and final season of Sailor Moon that was never released in America, Sailor Stars. I will admit that this season is darker than the rest of the series, but if you want to see the official ending of the series and the amazing finale, I can not urge you enough to get this set.
The first box set holds the first three seasons, uncut and unedited, just like the second set. This too is completely worth your while.
The only problems that I had with the sets were that some of the subtitles didn't play. But that didn't happen too often, and I was too busy enjoying the series to care that much. There was also a problem with one of the dvds, where it would start at the very beginning episode, even if you went to the episode menu and selected the one you wanted. If you tried to skip ahead to get to where you left off, it wouldn't work, and it just went back to the beginning. Again, not that big of a deal since my dvd player allows me to fastforward as well as skip.
The series definitely shows its age (it ran from 1992 to 1997, after all), but the artwork wasn't that bad for being so old. And frankly, if you love the series as much as I do, you come to love it.
The fact that the sets are relativly cheap is a pro, too. Just buying one season, even on Amazon, costs upwards of a hundred dollars. But by buying the two box sets -- with the entire series between the two -- you save a lot of money.
In conclusion, this will probably be the best money you ever spend on an animated series. It's a classic, and completely and totally worth every penny.

3.0 out of 5 stars If you're going to bootleg, don't use Comic Sans MS, January 9, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sailor Moon Limited Edition Box Set II (DVD)
There is no doubt in my mind that this is not an official product, having seen the originals almost a decade ago. However, if you love the series and want the Sailor Stars series, it is worth buying.

While the packaging looks authentic, the only thing that looks decent in real life is the actual box. Even then, the title of the box set is typed using Comic Sans MS, which is a dead giveaway that this is a bootleg. On top of that, when you pull the DVDs out of the box, the cases have the series labeled not only in Comic Sans MS, but they are placed in absolutely horrible positions and in colors that you can't read. Each DVD case doesn't even have the correct images from the series it's representing (I have the Starlights inside the case for the SuperS series!). Also, the pixel resolution on the cases can't be more than 100dpi on a smaller size. When blown up to the case size, there is some pixelation. Not only that, but the DVDs in the case that is for the movies in listed in the wrong order of their creation. An authentic product would NEVER be put together in this manner!

As far as the quality of the DVDs goes, it's very good. The overall picture could have been better, but it's not scratchy or distorted. It looks like it was recorded off an original product, but it is NOT high quality that one would expect.

If you're like me and you don't know Japanese and want to watch it subbed, there are phrases and quotes that are COMPLETELY LEFT OUT. There will be random spots where one character will say something and you won't have a subtitle for it, but then another character picks up and the titles come back. I haven't had a chance to fully watch all the movies and the SuperS series yet, but there is also a point in one episode in the Sailor Stars series where whoever is writing the titles starts adding in little random notes to see if you're paying attention. It's worth a good "LOL," but really unprofessional. Another thing that bugged me about the subtitles is that when I went to pop in the first SuperS disc, for some reason I'm not allowed to view the titles, but only hear Japanese or English voices. I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I like my Anime in pure Japanese; I do not want to listen to the horrible name changes and English voice actors like I had to when it first aired on Cartoon Network. I will also say that when I put in the R movie and forwarded it to the end (I HAD to know if this version let me hear "Moon Revenge" as opposed to the horrible song they added to the English version / American subbed version they released back in the day - good news folks! It's in there!), I noticed that the subs gave you select lyrics, and while the characters were talking, it would either only keep the lyrics on the screen or not even change to what they were saying. If I had not seen this movie in bootleg form a decade ago, I would have had no clue what they were saying.

With that in mind, I've also had a few problems with the actual DVDs. On the third disc of Sailor Stars, the final three episodes start and stop and are almost completely unwatchable. This happens a few more times at the beginning of the fourth disc, too, but not nearly as bad. I also noticed it on the final disc of the SuperS series once or twice, too. Also, at the end of the R movie, I'm not allowed to watch the credits and am instantly brought back to the menu screen. This is all on my DVD player, and I have yet to see if I have the same effect on my Mac. Hopefully I will have better luck, because I missed out on a two and a half episodes where a long of important stuff happens.

The good thing about this product is that it stays true to the series. For anyone who has been frustrated by the Americanization of the series and the gender role reversal of certain characters, you will love the fact that the subtitles don't leave anything out. There are no cuts in the animation that I'm aware of. I will say that I do like the picture quality, despite the fact that it isn't amazing. It gives you the feel that you're back in the 1990s watching the series on your home TV set. Watching this has also made me sit back and say, "You know, they don't animate like this anymore." It really makes you appreciate 90's animation before EVERYTHING went digital.

I'll also throw in the fact that I found the Sailor Stars series completely satisfying on every level. Having only been able to see a recorded copy of the final four episodes (in Japanese, no subtitles, and oh look, Japanese commercials) about ten years ago, I found a new respect for the series overall. If you're getting this for the Sailor Stars series, it is worth the money, despite the physical kinks I had. It is enjoyable, and takes the series to a whole new level. It feels like the series is more mature compared to prior seasons, and maybe I'm just a little nerd at heart, but I really laughed at not only the animation, but the dialogue and subliminal messages.

If conclusion, if you haven't seen any of the seasons and the movies previously in other bootlegs and/or other translations, you will love this product. If you've seen it previously and debating on buying it, it's not a waste of money and you will be satisfied. But if you're willing to wait another decade for them to come out with an official product with high quality and amazing subtitles and extras, I'd say to wait and hopefully find something better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it, love it, love it!, July 28, 2007

This review is from: Sailor Moon Limited Edition Box Set II (DVD)
I have loved Sailor Moon since I was a girl and being able to have it and share it with my kids was an awesome experience. So what if it's just a cartoon, the message is still clear: Love conquers and heals all. Who wouldn't want to share something like that? The movies are excellent and I highly recommend this box set to the Sailor Moon fans who have been putting off buying it like I did :p
