Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

An anime variant of the Pied Piper story, this one-hour movie pits the pretty soldiers against Queen Valdiana, who wants to put the world to sleep in order to harvest dream energy. Aimed at younger Sailor Moon fans, the film puts the ultra-cute Chibi-Usa at the center of the fairy-tale plot (she's Sailor Moon's yet-to-be-born daughter, sent back from the future for reasons too complicated to explain). Nevertheless, there's enough wacky humor and superpowered action (including an appearance by Sailor Uranus and the other Outer Senshi) to keep all ages interested. The opening sequences look wonderful--a flying ship comes to carry away the children who have been hypnotized by a flute-playing fairy--and the haunting music in this subtitled version adds a little extra chill to the atmosphere. Sailor Moon Super S may not contribute much to the ongoing arc of the Sailor Moon story, but as a self-contained movie it's a lot of fun. Ages 7 and up. --Simon Leake

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Movie! Is it worth buying? Yes!, August 17, 2000
By A Customer
I have the dub and the sub versions, and to make life easier, I'll divide the parts into good, bad, and the treats:

The BAD: The voice for Diana( Luna and Artemis's feline daughter ) does NOT match at ALL! It sounded like a grown woman with a nasal problem. They should have just asked a small kid to do the voice. Also, another thing that might disappoint the hard-core Moon fan is that there's no special footage in the video when they show Sailor Moon's attack( "Moon Gorgeous Meditation" ); they just show her do a team with Rini's attack into the Dream Hole with no special shots. Another thing is that you don't get to see the transformations of Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. Oh well...

The GOOD:(There's lots) The graphics are spectacular! If the graphics and animation on the R and S movies were 5-6 on a scale of 1 to 10, this movie's animation would get 11! You can actually see good art details of the attacks, the backgrounds, and the characters! Very nice! Also, we get a peek of the dub's version of the new Sailor powers: the crystal transformations of the Inner Sailor Scouts, the attacks("Mercury Aqua Rhapsody!", "Mars Flame Sniper!", "Jupiter Oak Evolution!", "Venus Love and Beauty Shock!"), and the planet treasures of Uranus and Neptune( "Space Sword Blaster!", "Submarine Reflection!"). Also, we get to see Diana, Luna and Artemis's daughter. As an extra bonus, the voicers of the enemies and Perulu(the fairy that befriends Rini) are great and are really believable. No problem there. Oh yeah, and during a battle sequence, when Sailor Moon is trapped in a dream world, and she meets with Darien, the background plays the song "Nothing At All" which ACTUALLY fits the mood! Excellent choice for the movie!

The TREATS: First, the moral( for you parents out there ): the moral in the video is that the kids are being kidnapped because the enemy wants to keep them in a dream world forever where they'll never experience pain and never face reality. But in the video, Sailor Moon realizes that it's better to face the real world because no fantasy world can provide love and friends. Plus, it's not always bad to face a bad day in life because you have friends and family to help you deal with it. After all, some things are too good to be true, and you can't see through life thinking that way. Nice, if not preachy, moral. Also, the plot of the dub follows the plot of the sub, MORE or LESS, so I don't want to hear any complaints about the dub not following the sub! Also, I got used to the voices of Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, REALLY!( Trust me, if you watched the Sailor Moon S series on Cartoon Network at 4:00 P.M., you'll get used to the voices and think that they fit too ). So overall, the voices of the characters did pretty well, except Diana.

So is it worth buying? Yes, in a nutshell, because there's hardly any bad parts or nudity( think a plastic Barbie doll engulfed in light ), all the voices in the dub are the same ones from the past, there's some humor, the dub left most things in, and this is the only time you can see the English version of the Super attcks, transformations, and more of Mini Moon( surprisingly, I'm actually used to that name too, thanks to the Cartoon Network's showings! ). Plus, it has a nice plot, so I'd doubt you'd get bored brainless from watching this video.

3.0 out of 5 stars One for the fans., July 7, 2000

Philip Bolton "Panda Phil" (Auburn, WA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As the third consecutive Sailor Moon film, SailorMoon:SuperS features an absolutely lovely musical score, and is without a doubt the most beautifully animated SM adventure yet! It's obvious the studio put a lot of money into this production. It also has an incredibly charming opening credit sequence that is probably the cutest part of the entire film series!

The fairly straightforward plot introduces the evil Lady Vadiane, a giant magical being who sends her 3 Fairy minions to Earth to capture children. She plans to use their 'Sugar Energy' to power a giant black hole with which to absorb the entire Earth! After Chibi-Usa (Rini) is captured in one of the raids, it's up to the Sailor Team to rescue her and save the world yet again.

Some familiarity with the original series might be helpful before watching since the girls all have new attacks, and new Senshi and a new feline character have been added to the cast. It's not absolutely necessary though.

There is some implied nudity in the form of drawn outlines of the girls bodies in rainbow colored energy forms. But parents would probably be hard-pressed to find this one scene offensive for younger viewers.

In fact, it's probably younger fans who'll get more out of this one, with it's colorful attacks, cute production designs, and nonstop action. For more mature SM lovers; aside from the usual powerful bonds between the girls, some fun moments with Usagi(Serina) and her long-suffering boyfriend Mamoru(Darien) and the usual comedic bickering between Chibi-Usa and Usagi, there isn't a whole lot here. Good heros need good enemies and in this case, Vadiane just doesn't cut it. She's a very powerful being, but an extremely one-dimensional one. There's no explaination of exactly WHY she wants to destroy the Earth, other than just being evil. This really hurts the films sense of drama, as the evil Queen just becomes another straw figure to be easily knocked over by Usagi and friends. It's such a pity that an otherwise fine production has to fall down in this one respect. I know it can be difficult to creat an interesting character with less than an hour of screentime to work with, but surely a few throwaway lines couldn't have hurt.

All in all though it's a good adventure to add to your Sailor Moon collection, but definately purchase the R and S movies first.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Sailor Moon Movie!, January 17, 2000
By
This review is from: Sailor Moon Super S [VHS] (VHS Tape)
O.K. I've seen all three Sailor Moon movies and this is definately my favorite one! For all of you people out there that live in North America and haven't seen any new Sailor Moon stuff this is the movie for you! It has all of the scouts (except Saturn ^.^)in their new uniforms and they have new powers. The movie is centered on Chibimoon,in case you don't like Chibimoon, but it's still a great movie. One of my favorite parts was when Usagi asked Mamuro who he loved most, her or Chibi. Well, the movie is about Peruru, a fairy boy, and how he doesn't want to take little kids and put them in a dream world. He meets Chibi and he feels, now more than ever, that kids shouldn't be put into a dream world. Eventually Chibimoon gets kidnapped and its up to the scouts to save her and the other kids. I wont tell you how it ends, since it's better to see the movie than me telling you. I hope you enjoy Sailor Moon SuperS as much as I do.
