Book Description

November 15, 2001 Oxford World's Classics
Billy Budd is among the greatest of Melville's works and, in its richness and ambiguity, among the most problematic. Outwardly a compelling narrative of events aboard a British man-of-war during the turmoil of the Napoleonic Wars, Billy Budd, Sailor is a nautical recasting of the Fall, a parable of good and evil, a meditation on justice and political governance, and a searching portrait of three extraordinary men. In this edition are also eight shorter tales, reprinted from the most authoritative recent editions and are supplemented by a penetrating introduction and full notes.

This collection offers an excellent taste of Melville's shorter works, including his brilliant, posthumously-published novella "Billy Budd, Sailor", "Bartleby, the Scrivener," and "Benito Cereno." As I wrote in my review of "Moby-Dick", at the risk of sounding cheesy, Melville was a master with words. I am constantly amazed at how in-depth and with such detail, and often humorously, he describes people, places, things, and states of mind.

So, if you have read "Moby-Dick" and are hungry for more, this volume proves a delightful next course. But, if you have contemplated "Moby-Dick" but are not sure if you are ready to dig in quite yet, this will prove a delicious appetizer.

Either way, taste and see.
