Don't waste your money on this one. As a "Tin Can Sailor" myself I can tell you the book was well beyond reality. Sailors in Navy towns during the 1960s (when civilian clothes were not allowed on ship) were indeed second class citizens. Local girls had nothing to do with us, unless of course we were officers. I expected to read a book based somewhat on reality. I expected much more on life aboard a tin can, with its slush funds, division structure, Navy chow, watches, mean "lifers," and condescending officers. Instead, I was treated to account after account of detailed unrealistic sexual exploits by two junior petty offices with willing locals in Navy towns. The only difference between "Sailors and Dogs Keep Off!" and what we called f#@+* books, was that the f#@+* books had some semblance of a plot. This book didn't even have chapters. Save your money on this one!

Most Navy vets relish the thought of renewing their old affinity with the sea and and life abourd ship. With this in mind I looked forward to reading Mr. Caldwell's offering, his plea to give it a chance was compelling. More to the point, this was an absolute piece of trash; I got to page 3, I believe, and threw the book out. This book belongs in the 'Dumpster', it was an embarassment to read and a very poor depiction of life in the Navy.

Slop Chute Material,

This tale was more than a work of fiction it was pure #"&^%! I spent over 30 years in the Navy and retired as a MCPO (1990). This representation of life during that period is without a doubt the most ridiculous I have ever encountered. The author reflects so little understanding of what being a sailor is that it raises serious doubts as to his claim of having served in the U.S. Navy. The style is atrocious and is written in the British manner as opposed to colloquial American English. I truly regret enrichening his pocked in any way!

I do not mind fiction, but this is the worst that I have ever come across. This is nothing but PORN. I spent enough time overseas and on ships when I was in the Navy but I never saw anything that comes close to what is in this book, not even in my drunken moments.DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. I wish I could rate this a NO STAR!!!!

I wish I had read other reviews prior to purchasing this book. I realize that in my earlier, Navy days, the language would not have bothered me and I must admit that I was as much a user of it as the next 'swabby.' If I had been forewarned I would have saved my money for a different book. I wouldn't want anyone in my reading this one. It was factual from the standpoint the many sailors, as well as other military as well as civilians use the language noted in this book, but (hopefully) as we mature we are able to put it aside.

Intrigued,
This review is from: Sailors And Dogs Keep Off! (Paperback)
I bought this book for my husband but was intrigued by its reviews and wanted to see what all the fuss was about. The cover blurbs said it was humorous and titillating. It was funny and I sure was titillated! So this is what sailors do on shore-leave. It's a wonder these two young men got out alive! Their many encounters with women made them seem like a pair of itinerant Don Juans but amidst all this earthy bawdiness there were a few tender, romantic moments. I'm certain that this book would appeal to men as well as women. I know that my guy will like it, 'cause I once told him "you have too much romance in your soul." The quality of writing is at a level that one would not expect in a book such as this, I would reommend it to any adult. "Let the games begin!"...Indeed.

This book has been on my wish list every since it came out. I finally was able to buy it and it was a complete disappointment. While the author and his buddy are no different than any other Sailor, and while I have been there-done that on some of the situations he writes about, it amounts to no more than an effort to put into words what XXXX rated videos do. There wasn't even any information about Destroyer shipboard activities or much of anything "Sailor" about the book. Content crappy, less than 100 pages and priced way too high. You can get me back later R.T. when I publish my Navy days book. Fair enough? Ron

No, I do not know the author, and yes, it is really not much of a story, but Mr. Caldwell has potential as a writer. Let's critique the book not the man.Early on, on page one, I knew that I'd finish the book when I read: "...the bayonet standing out haughtily and seeming to shimmer like a shred of quicksilver ready to break up and run in rivulets down the barrel." WOW. I kept reading for the next jewel in his writing. There were others in-between page one and twelve, here's what I underlined on page twelve: "...his thoughts turned to liquid and ran down the walls of his brain..." Okay it was smutty, but was not full-out distasteful. The man can write, pure and simple. (I was on a "tin can" and severed on two fast attacks subs. I never got as lucky as Terry and Fred but darn if I wasn't looking to. We were young. Remember?) I congratulate Caldwell on his first published work, AND I look forward to his next. This shipmate can write! Bravo Zulu.

Jump Start Your Heart,

What a wild and crazy book! Held my interest throughout.I never knew the sex-act could be depicted in so many different ways, and funny to boot! Even the fight scenes had me laughing. My wife, after reading the book, shook her head and said "Those crazy sailors!" Never having been a sailor, all I can say is the U.S. Navy should adopt this book as a recruiting manual. They'd be inundated with enlistees. The only downside is that I found the ending was a little too abrupt. I felt like I'd gotten to know Fred and T.J. It was like losing a couple of buddies.
