I also thought I was going to learn about knot tying, but pleasantly found out that the knots were in the mixups and goings on of the characters. It's a fun to read book in which we learn about the language and character of lower class Englishmen. The stories are humorous and well written. We see rascals getting just rewards, badgered husbands and wives turning the tables on their others, tricksters getting tricked, and all leave the reader with a nice feeling.

As a free Kindle book you can't go wrong to try it out.

The author has a nice ear for dialect and the stories are fun. Just don't buy the book if you're looking to learn about knotcraft.

This is a book of stories, which are quite interesting, and some are well-told. I was actually looking for a book on knot-tying, so it didn't fit my needs; I suppose I should have previewed it first.

NOT a book about TYING knots. A book of stories (knots) told in 'ol english sailor talk. Not sure what I was thinking when I added it to my Kindle. At least it was free so no real complaint

Sorry but I'm a retired Navy and when I saw the title I thought it was for tieing knots. So as far as the book is I was disappointed. To bad it wasn't for the real knot tying.

While attempting to learn a little about sailors of old and their craft I found this book, thinking it would have useful information about how to tie knots. After downloading it to my kindle and flipping through a few pages, (and noticing that again kindle editions have no diagrams.)I almost deleted it. Not being the type of person to give up on a book easily without giving it a chance, I began reading it hoping it would, at least, have very well described directions for knot tying.

This book has nothing to do with tying knots! Having made that point clear, I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good short story and a chuckle. After reading some of these one chapter stories, I actually set back and laughed at what I had just read. I enjoyed every story in this book. The book contains stories, mostly dealing with sailors and their mishaps in port but there are a couple of gentleman scoundrels thrown into the mix.

I was looking for a book on knot tying and this is not it.
Appears to be some sort of novel.

My father used to read these stories to the family when I was nine or ten and even later. I kept the hardcovers for a while but lost them in a move. Now I have them again and love them just as much. His descriptions of ordinary life for the underclass in Britain and his love of the sea and of sailors is apparent throughout and provide chuckles and bursts of laughter and empathy with the foibles of the ordinary man and woman.
