A funny illustrated book, written with fertile imagination, which humorously redefines nautical terms and includes puns, limericks and other light verse.

The Sailor's Hornbook, or ABC,
By jack lewis (california) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Sailor's Hornbook: or ABC with a Vermiform Appendix on Racing Terminology (Paperback)
This funny book should be of interest to sailors and other persons with maritime interests, as well as to those interested in words. The humor is dry and sometimes satirical; some of the definitions are really off the wall. The illustrations are good as is the light verse. The whole book is imaginative and facetious and the author draws from wide-ranging knowledge: sailing, oceanography, science, literature, poetry. The section on racing terminology is hilarious. There is a definition of Racing Rules ("which should be written clearly") which, on purpose, is totally and ridiculously incomprehensible. I hope O'Neal will write similar books on other sports.
