Editorial Reviews

2012 album from the Irish singer/songwriter and former Energy Orchard main man. The album was produced by Rock legend Mark Knopfler. Knopfler adds his distinctive guitar alongside other luminaries such as Jerry Douglas, Michael McGoldrick and John McCusker on a more folky sounding record.

While I am more of a fan of Rock and Blues this was a very nice introduction to something closer to Country and Folk. Mind you, this is Americana filtered through an Irish lens. Very interesting. The production qualities are out of this world, the strings and the wind instruments will haunt you. This is the intersection where folk/country/blues/rock all breath and resonate. Very much looking forward to a tour of America by Mr. Kennedy. I've read that this will have an American release in June and the price should be more reasonable. Check it out.

Where has Bap Kennedy been all our lives? This is a superb CD, with music and lyrics finely crafted and compelling. Producer Mark Knopfler's playing and influence are subtle but unmistakable. Still, if you listen to Bap's earlier music (some excellent examples of which you'll find on the "Deluxe Edition.") you'll know this is distinctly Bap Kennedy, as yet not widely-heralded, yet one of the most moving talents I've heard in recent years. He's a welcome addition to the superlatives of his folksy, bluesy, ethnicly-influenced genre. "Sailor's Revenge," flavored with it's Celtic melancholy and lively touches, is his best so far. I think "Jimmy Sanchez" is my favorite track, but they're all good. And Bap, definitely, tour the USA! And don't forget Atlanta!

Wonderful lyrics and just super instrumentation/arrangements. You can clearly understand every lyric, and they are well worth it. Knopfler's production is super. His contributions on National Guitar (and/or slide guitar?) make many of the songs extra special. I was not familiar with Mr. Kennedy's work, so am getting the deluxe version which includes a second disk of "greatest hits". NOTE WELL: If you want to get the deluxe, don't pay the $39 bucks on Amazon USA. Go to Amazon UK and you can get this (exchange rate as of 6/10/12)for about $21 including shipping!! Not the first time I have found UK artists recording at a cheaper price at Amazon UK. Anyhow, if you liked Knopfler's "Ragpicker's Dream" CD, you should really enjoy Sailor's Revenge. Both great.

Incredible partnerships with some of the best and brightest names in music mark the solo career of Bap Kennedy. Whether working with the great Steve Earle on Bap's first solo album, Domestic Blues, or with Van Morrison on Kennedy's tune, Milky Way, or with the Pogue's Shan MacGowan on the tune, On the Mighty Ocean Alcohol, Bap always finds himself aligning with quality, top shelf talent.

His latest solo effort, Sailor's Revenge, is no exception. Having caught the attention of Mark Knopfler with his album, The Big Picture, that landed Kennedy a guest role on one of Knopfler's tours, the relationship led to Dire Straits front man to produce Kennedy's latest CD.

Sailor's Revenge is one of those CD's that you just want to pop into your player and start driving down the longest, loneliest stretch of highway that you can find and never, ever stop. Yes, the whole album is that good.

Three randomly picked Boomerocity favorites would be:

Shimnavale - this opening track of the CD is about a small neighborhood near Newcastle in County Down, Ireland. Kennedy says of the song, "The song is about traditional things like goin' away and comin' back, misfortune and looking back on an idyllic childhood."

Probably the most poignant song on the album is Jimmy Sanchez. The song was inspired by the youngest of the Chilean miners who were trapped for 69 days in the San Jose mining disaster. Bap was inspired by Sanchez who said that God had put him in that mine so that he would change.

Finally, The Right Stuff, is a tune originally recorded on Bap's Howl On album and, at Knopfler's insistence, was re-recorded for Sailor's Revenge. The song explores the philosophical implications of looking at earth while standing on the moon.
