5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, soothing, calm, mood music
One of my favorite CD's of all time. I've given this as gifts and everyone loves it. A perfect CD to watch the sunset to. The first song starts with waves, then seagulls, then beautiful guitar music. The remainder of the CD continues the relaxed, beautiful mood. Not a country CD, just good music.

5.0 out of 5 stars This remains a favorite!, July 6, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Sails (Audio CD)
My husband (a guitar picker) & I have enjoyed SAILS for several years & it remains a favorite. Yes, it is different from what one usually expects from Chet. I picked it up from a bin by chance, knowing if Chet did it, it HAD to be good. My husband is also an avid sailor, so the combination had to be a winner! We made a tape of it to play in our pontoon boat tape player & it is so perfect just "cruising down the river" leisurely enoying friends, food, & nature with our music.
I am so glad to see it still available to give fellow boaters that love it like we do.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rare Atkins Cd worth the hunt, January 27, 2008

Long time Chet Atkins devotees (there are no "fans", only worshippers) love the late greatest guitarist of all time for his astonishing mastery of any type of music he felt like exploring and putting all comers to shame in the process. From old country to show tunes, to covering the Beatles and working with Mark Knopfler and Les Paul, he did it all.
"Sails" is a companion piece to "C.G.P.", both '80's releases of smooth jazz/pop music that showed his contemporary side. "Sails" is hard to find, but can be ordered on Amazon. It is a synth and strings heavy mellow outing, his playing more sparse, serving the melodies and avoiding overplaying, which shows how great he was, understanding economy is just as vital as shredding. For those in a quiet contemplative mood, wishing for some real melody or soothing jagged nerves, it can't be beat. Far from wimpy Muzak crap, "Sails" is tasteful and top notch, which one could expect nothing less from this giant of American music.

I found out about this album while checking a problem with my father's stereo. My brother had given this CD to him as a gift. I borrowed it from my father and found myself not wanting to give it back! Finaly I purchased my own copy and I never get tired of it. Let me say I am not a Chet Atkins fan by any means. In fact this is NOT my normal type of music that I prefer. But, this album is in a word, Excellent! It is very relaxing and helps me unwind, but it is not at all boring or repetitious. The mix and sound quality are excellent as well. If you enjoy instumental guitar music and don't have this in your collection you're missing out. The first song "Sails" opens with waves crashing on the shore and then every song after just flows together that before you know it, the album is over. It is also a great album to listen to on a Sunday morning with your second cup of coffee or anytime you just want to relax. In all honesty, I can't see how anyone who appreciates good music would not love this album. This guy was truly one of the guitar greats and is accompanied by fine musicians on this album. Treat yourself and buy a copy!

5.0 out of 5 stars THE 2 STAR REVIEW IS A PATHETIC JOKE, January 7, 2002
By
This review is from: Sails (Audio CD)
FIRST OFF, DON'T PUT ANY WEIGHT UPON THE 2 STAR REVIEW, UNLESS YOUR ALSO SLIP SLIDING INTO BUDDY HOLLY MEMORIES. THIS ALBUM IS NOT CHET ATKINS TRYING TO PICK UP WOMEN WITH GUITAR GYMNASTICS.
THE MUSIC IS NOT MISUNDERSTOOD JAZZ. ITS NOT I'M BLOWING YOUR MIND WITH THESE KOOKY LICKS. WHAT IS IT?
MELODIC. TOUCH. FEEL. SOUND. VARIETY. ACCESSIBLE. STRONG SONGS. ENJOYABLE. THIS ALBUM SITS SLIGHTLY BEHIND THE CHESTER AND LESTER ALBUMS(2) IN PLAYING ROTATION FOR ME BECAUSE IT IS SIMPLY GREAT MUSIC. YES, I HAVE SOUGHT OUT ALL THE OLD CHET MATERIAL, SEEN ALL HIS AUSTIN CITY LIMITS SHOWS, READ THE GUITAR PLAYER ARTICLES, ETC. BOTTOM LINE -- I CONTINUE TO SEARCH FOR ALBUMS WITH THIS SOUND BUT FIND VERY FEW, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF SOME OF THE GREAT EARL KLUGH MUSIC AND SOME OF THE MORE GENTLE MARK KNOPFLER SONGS. IF YOU FIND EARL KLUGH TO BE ELEVATOR MUSIC THAN, YOU WILL FIND YOURSELF AT HOME IN THE BACK SEAT OF A SEDAN WITH BUDDY HOLLY.

This is a great release. I currently own the LP and I am about to obtain the CD. Chet is assisted with numerous jazz musicians. The songs on this album will not only relax you, but will also put you in the mood to tap your feet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mr. Guitar, of course, April 8, 2011

Chet Atkins through and through. The music is not quite my taste, but I have listened to this CD a dozen times because there is nobody who ever played a guitar like Chet. I've heard it said, 'If Chet Atkins had decided to be a farmer, we would all take six foot long green beans for granted.' I couldn't agree more.

This 1987 Chet Atkin's album finds him slip-sliding away. Please don't get me wrong. Believe me. when I was in the 8th grade, I got into fistfights defending Chet Atkin's unheralded mastery of the guitar. Of course, back then, in the 1950's I had his "Chet Atkins in Three Dimensions" on the RCA label to prove it. Now while Chet wasn't the reason I bought my first electric guitar (that was becaues of Buddy Holly), Chet Atkins and His Guitar were synonymous with excellence in the rough - the rough being country. Country was at the root of his fresh approach to the other guitar genres - folk, classical, Latin, etc. In retrospect there were about 8 seminal albums like "Dimensions" that Chet cut for RCA Victor. I'm not going to name them off because guitar aficianados are already well aware of them.(They're all out on CD by the way.)Sails is not seminal. It's down right weak.
