They'll drive forward and reverse but struggle to turn on hard floors, and absolutely will not turn on carpet.

The rails that hold the motors are threaded for M3 to attach the front, back, top and bottom plates.

It's a great looking chassis, and it has plenty of mounting points, including some that align with the arduino.

But:
- The motors are far too weak. They'll drive forward and reverse but struggle to turn on hard floors, and absolutely will not turn on carpet.
- The wheels don't fit quite right on the drive shafts, so you'll get a wobble.

For $50 I didn't expect much, and the laser cut metal chassis was probably worth that, but the motors are absolute trash.

This is a nice little chassis for the price. The DC motors are a little weak using the included battery holder. I went with a 9.6v 1600mAh RC battery and the motors work a lot better. Instructions are not included but are easily accessible from the SainSmart website.

I read reviews of this all over the web, so I had some expectations of what I was getting. This kit is inexpensive, but it takes a little bit of hacking to get it working at its best. First of all, get a good rechargeable battery pack with this. I got this one on Amazon: <True Energy 9.6V/1600mAh Ni-MH RC Car Battery/Charger Combo> for $15. It works great for this, and gives the motors plenty of power. Don't plan on using (wired) USB power, or the included battery pack. They are both too weak. (note: I cut the connectors off of the rechargeable battery pack and charger and replaced them with standard Molex connectors.)

The motors are noisy. I started testing this late at night, and it seemed REALLY LOUD. In an environment with ambient noise, it isn't that noticeable, but in a quiet environment, it can be annoying.

On the positive side, this is an inexpensive platform (even with the $15 battery pack) for learning how to control a robot with an Arduino. Next, I plan on hooking up some ultrasonic distance sensors to make my robot able to avoid walls and furniture.

Please stay away from this mobile robot platform. I am getting very suspicious of Sain Smart. Some of the other products that I have bought are substandard, namely Arduino based modules.
Unlike the other distributors, this has some funky spray job, not an anodize. So fitting the screws into the taps take time and energy.
Missing hardware, namely connector nuts. The DC power plug does not have a nut to lock it down, yet I have a washer and a lock washer to accommodate threaded DC plug.
No instructions. Yet a nice rainbow ribbon? I have made a few of these platforms before for our nephews and nieces, but this one is the worst. They are coming in a few weeks and enjoy my small prototyping bench. Unfortunately, the quality control at Sain Smart is lacking. I will make it a point not to buy their distributed product. I have had better luck with Maker Shed and Adafruit. Never had issues with their products.

It is a great car but you have to a lot of leg work- it came with no instructions, hole spacing for Arduino not placed. So there was some trial and error. I used online videos and web searches to find what I needed pretty quickly. Hunting everything done' made it both frustrating and educational at the same time.

I gave it 4 stars, for two reasons, it is a cute, solid car once (or if) you get it done. I think everyone would have been more satisfied if there were instructions, some more hardware, Arduino appropriate mounting holes and an example sketch.

I would buy again.

This is a great little platform for a small (10 x 10)robot. I only wish it had the encoder option on the motors, but hey, for the price it's great. It is basic so you will need a controller, motor drivers, sensors and some kind of remote or wireless. The frame is very solid and pretty roomy. Lots of holes to attach standard sensor frames and servos. I'm using it to debug software and it's perfect for what I want. I love the SainSmart store too. I usually run out of money before I can put everything I want into my cart because they have so much to offer. I have never been disappointed with them.

I was eager to get this and build it to be controlled via my xbox controller. However, when i assembled it and started it up it did nothing. The motors were so weak it wouldn't even move the robot on carpet, hardwood was okay but still not impressive. I bought some new motors and it works great. So if you plan on actually using this robot I'd advise getting more powerful motors.

No documentation
No build instructions, had to find them online and even those from the SainSmart site are lacking details
No code
Also thought I was buying the whole kit, no controller board (Motor bridge)
no sensors, they have to purchased separately
