I initially tested this setting it on the computer desk on the first floor with the computer on. I used the whip antenna it came with. I live in an apartment complex that sits on a piece of land that is recessed. Essentially, it was a basic setup in a crappy location. I got in my car and drove. I was amazed to see the signal carry at least 3/4 of a mile clearly and around three with varying results (on high hills, I got adequate reception).

I put it in a window sill on the second floor. I went out around 1.25 miles clearly and out to about two miles with a usable signal. I could still hear the signal, albeit not clearly, out to four miles.

The unit has seperate 3.5 mm plugs for audio input and a use of a microphone. It has dials to adjust the input level for each. It also has digital tuning.

Be careful since this isn't legal to operate without a license in the USA. The power output is way too strong. I'm surprised Amazon is able to sell it. If you want to play "radio station", I would not broadcast more than a few hours at a time here and there, and I would do it only occasionally. If I use it to rebroadcast internet radio around my home, I'll probably operate it without using the antenna.

Two complaints though: 1) I came with no manual. 2) The item description says you can choose between transmission power levels, but there are no directions how.

I found out how to switch between one and seven watts: 1) With the plugg unplugged, press and hold the power button. 2) Plug the unit in with the power button pressed in. 3) Use the up and down arrows to toggle between "H" (seven watts) and "L" (one watt).

UPDATE 7/19/13:

All, I just found a manual for the 1/2 watt version of this transmitter at [...

The Sain Sonic CZH-7c mini FM broadcast transmitter from Amazon.com is an outstanding buy. CZH Co. of China manufactures both low and high powered FM/AM broadcast transmitters...A well known company in China, the CZH products are constructed from high quality components, and made with an eye toward quality and good engineering practice. Circuitry is well designed and executed, and performance is outstanding.
As a retired broadcast engineer, I have dealt with many types and quality levels of professional and consumer FM, AM and analog television recieving and transmitting equipment, as well as source equipment and audio/video processing and signal routing (Studio and location) equipment. THE CZH 7C IS SURPRISINGLY WELL MADE AND DURABLE....
The included base-loaded whip antenna is tuned for 88 Mhz when fully extended and will give good "out-of-the-box" performance at that frequency. (87.5 to 88.5mhz) You must tune the antenna to a shorter length for higher frequencies within the FM band.....Internet search for these instructions....A simple 1/2 wave "stealth" antenna can be made using TV rabbit ears.
I recommend building and using an outdoor FM transmitting antenna....It's best to avoid exposure to excessive RF energy, so getting the antenna up and away from your living area is a good practice. Lots of instructions on-line for 1/4 wave, 1/2 wave and 5/8ths wave antennas.... Be sure to use a good quality coaxial cable of the shortest length parcticable to hook the transmitter to the antenna.
Be aware that the transmitter does NOT come with instructions....You must search out the lower model CZH transmitter, the CZH-5 for instructions. PLEASE BE SURE TO CONNECT AN ANTENNA BEFORE CONNECTING THE POWER SUPPLY!

Fast shipping, good compromise between price and power output. Keeping in mind that 7W excedes widely the limits imposed in the US by FCC ffor unlicensed broadcsting, this little toy is a good compromise between model 5 (0.5W maxoutput, price around 60 bucks) and model 20 (20W, price in the 270 area). My transmitter arrived with extensible antenna (not usual whip as with mod.5), 2 ft. totally ext., 90x360 turnable. Arrived complete of audio cable 6 ft. . No instructions at all were included in the box: anyway operating is very simple, and works as mod. 5 ( instructions easy to find on internet).
Before operating in the US and all territories regulated by FCC please remember: cannot be operated in the US at full power without broadcasting license, and no signs of compliance with FCC omologation is visible on the transmitter.
From a functional point of view this transmitter is OK. Operating frequencies can be changed (only for experiments and only with dummy if you use more power than allowed, no exceptions and no real trasmission). Haven't tested yet max output power.
Good transmitter, 5 stars.

This thing works great, if you get static move your power lead, input line, speaker wires, any metal object that may be close by.
you will have a problem with this at first but do not worry you will fix it if you have half a brain and common sense.
the little antenna that comes with it is more then plenty good for a hundred yards or more.
The fan is a little loud but I work in a loud work shop and cant hear it, at home it was noticeable.
over kill for the house great for a large shop or out door camp site.
Oh yah no directions, you can find em on line easy to change power levels but why , mine came on high power, 7 watts and just left it alone. For the price you cant beat it, no big bulky antenna and coax to deal with and came with all I needed to run it out of the box.
