Editorial Reviews

"With her shaved head and seven-octave range, Sainkho Namtchylak would stand out on any stage. Add her particular mix of Tuvan throat-singing and avant-garde improvisation, and she becomes an unforgettable figure." -- All Music Guide

Sainkho Namtchylak is an exceptional singer from the desert of Tuva, a small country lying on the border of Mongolia and Siberia. She has created a style combining the traditions of her nomadic past, folklore, guttural singing, and shamanism with influences from the current world of drum `n' bass, hip-hop, and contemporary jazz. Includes acclaimed American musicians William Parker (bass) and Hamid Drake (drums, percussion).

Shot on location at a performance at the Banlieues Bleues Festival near Paris, this film is part of La Huit's Freedom Now collection. Creative music of many kinds constitutes the heart of the collection. Total freedom was given to directors, who are reputed for their loving experience of filming music. Their films challenge the conservative codes of shooting musical performances.
