5.0 out of 5 stars This is a reliable book for preparing for first Confession a, May 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Saint Joseph First Communion Catechism (No. 0) (Paperback)
In preparation for first Confession and first Communion, this book presents an overview of salvation history in a way that can be understood by a first or second grader. This book is faithful to the "concentric method" of teaching the faith which has been praised in the General Catechetical Directory and also by Pope John Paul II in his work "Catechesi Tradendae". The topics of creation, the fall, redemption, and sacramental life are all presented in an orderly manner, with accompanying full color pictures. The artwork is striking, and will impress the child's mind with the aspect of the faith which is being taught. My children found themselves well prepared for the sacraments after learning from this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars True Catholic Doctrine--Superb Teaching Tool, December 15, 2004
This review is from: Saint Joseph First Communion Catechism (No. 0) (Paperback)
This wonderful Catechism teaches grades 1-3 all about God, creation, the Saints and how we must live to become Saints. I teach First Communion class and I think EVERY child needs to have this book. It will be the best $3 you ever spend. It is written in age-appropriate language with illustrations so that the children can understand it easily.

God's Truths have never changed-- we as a society have changed. This book teaches the Truth. It was published in 1963. I am not sure why the date listed in the description is different, yet the photo is the same? The 1963 edition is the only one I have ever seen. Anyway, this book answers the many questions that your child might be asking. Why am I here? What happens when we die? What are the prayers I should be saying? How did Jesus open heaven for us? It has the IMPRIMATUR seal of approval.

I heard a man speak named Brother Matthew. He said that if a man has a Ph.D., but doesn't know that he was created "to know God, love God and serve God to be happy with God in heaven..." then that man knows nothing.

As your child gets older, they will need a "higher-level" Catechism; the Baltimore Catechism series is the BEST. Remember, it will be the best $3 you ever spend.

5.0 out of 5 stars First Communion Catechism Proves Helpful in Forming Little Catholics, February 27, 2006
This review is from: Saint Joseph First Communion Catechism (No. 0) (Paperback)
I first purchased this book when my oldest son was preparing to receive his First Holy Communion 5 years ago. I have used it for his siblings as well in their preparations, and most recently purchased several copies to pass out to the parents of the children to whom I am teaching in a First Communion class at our parish. I appreciate this book for a number of reasons...First, its adherence to the truth of our Catholic Faith. There is nothing watered down or wishy washy or dumbed down in it. It explains the core truths in a way that a young child may easily understand. Secondly, I like the question/answer format. I require that my children memorize them. This may sound taxing to some but we make it a fun game that they enjoy, and I feel that it is important information that they will remember for the rest of their lives. We have to keep in mind too that memorization of this sort is easier for small children than it is for us adults. And thirdly, I like it because it is phonetically simple enough for most first/second graders to read themselves. My seven year old I am teaching now struggles with some of the words, but I just help her through them. All in all, I highly recommend this excellent book, and I thank Amazon for carrying it!
