This is a reliable book for preparing for first Confession a,
By A Customer
This review is from: Saint Joseph First Communion Catechism (No. 0) (Paperback)
In preparation for first Confession and first Communion, this book presents an overview of salvation history in a way that can be understood by a first or second grader. This book is faithful to the "concentric method" of teaching the faith which has been praised in the General Catechetical Directory and also by Pope John Paul II in his work "Catechesi Tradendae". The topics of creation, the fall, redemption, and sacramental life are all presented in an orderly manner, with accompanying full color pictures. The artwork is striking, and will impress the child's mind with the aspect of the faith which is being taught. My children found themselves well prepared for the sacraments after learning from this book.

True Catholic Doctrine--Superb Teaching Tool,
By Theresa (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Saint Joseph First Communion Catechism (No. 0) (Paperback)
This wonderful Catechism teaches grades 1-3 all about God, creation, the Saints and how we must live to become Saints. I teach First Communion class and I think EVERY child needs to have this book. It will be the best $3 you ever spend. It is written in age-appropriate language with illustrations so that the children can understand it easily.
God's Truths have never changed-- we as a society have changed. This book teaches the Truth. It was published in 1963. I am not sure why the date listed in the description is different, yet the photo is the same? The 1963 edition is the only one I have ever seen. Anyway, this book answers the many questions that your child might be asking. Why am I here? What happens when we die? What are the prayers I should be saying? How did Jesus open heaven for us? It has the IMPRIMATUR seal of approval. I heard a man speak named Brother Matthew. He said that if a man has a Ph.D., but doesn't know that he was created "to know God, love God and serve God to be happy with God in heaven..." then that man knows nothing. As your child gets older, they will need a "higher-level" Catechism; the Baltimore Catechism series is the BEST. Remember, it will be the best $3 you ever spend.

First Communion Catechism Proves Helpful in Forming Little Catholics,
This review is from: Saint Joseph First Communion Catechism (No. 0) (Paperback)
I first purchased this book when my oldest son was preparing to receive his First Holy Communion 5 years ago. I have used it for his siblings as well in their preparations, and most recently purchased several copies to pass out to the parents of the children to whom I am teaching in a First Communion class at our parish. I appreciate this book for a number of reasons...First, its adherence to the truth of our Catholic Faith. There is nothing watered down or wishy washy or dumbed down in it. It explains the core truths in a way that a young child may easily understand. Secondly, I like the question/answer format. I require that my children memorize them. This may sound taxing to some but we make it a fun game that they enjoy, and I feel that it is important information that they will remember for the rest of their lives. We have to keep in mind too that memorization of this sort is easier for small children than it is for us adults. And thirdly, I like it because it is phonetically simple enough for most first/second graders to read themselves. My seven year old I am teaching now struggles with some of the words, but I just help her through them. All in all, I highly recommend this excellent book, and I thank Amazon for carrying it!

Catechism of continuity,
By Rich Leonardi (Cincinnati, Ohio) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Saint Joseph First Communion Catechism (No. 0) (Paperback)
The New Saint Joseph First Communion Catechism compiles the chapters from the Baltimore Catechism that pertain to the sacraments of Penance and the Eucharist and expands them in language that a first communicant can understand. For instance, in Lesson 1, "God Made Us," the catechism asks, "What must you do to be happy with God in heaven?" The traditional answer -- "... I must know Him, love Him, and serve Him in this world" -- is given and then annotated:
"First I must KNOW God. I cannot love God unless I know Him well. To know God I must study my catechism. I must think about God every day. I must pray to God. Most of all I must LOVE God. We give gifts to those we love. I must make my life a gift to God. I must love God more than I love myself. I must love God more than I love anybody else. I must love God above all things. ..." Each lesson is followed by discussion questions to test knowledge but mostly to help readers understand the material and commit it to memory. There are twelve lessons in all, beginning with the nature of God, the Trinity, the Fall, the Incarnation, the Redemption, and an introduction to the sacraments, and concluding with Penance and the Holy Eucharist. So this First Communion catechism lays a firm, comprehensive foundation in the Faith. Yes, it pre-dates Vatican II, but bear in mind that its objective is to teach the fundamentals of the Faith. We can save discussions of topics like ecumenism and interreligious dialogue for a later date. Moreover, Pope Benedict has urged us to embrace a "hermeneutic of continuity." He writes of "the continuity of the one subject-Church which the Lord has given to us. She is a subject which increases in time and develops, yet always remaining the same, the one subject of the journeying People of God." In other words, there is no "old Church" and "new Church," but one Church, and we should draw on things like the Baltimore Catechism (upon which this book is based) as part of our God-given patrimony. If you want to teach your first communicant the Faith, this is your book. Highly recommended.

New is Old...in a good way!,
By LuAnn Malizia "Catholic-mom-in-a-minivan" (Huntersville, NC United States) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Saint Joseph First Communion Catechism (No. 0) (Paperback)
This is an awesome Catechism to teach your children the Truth with a capital "T". The text clearly teaches the beautiful tenets of Catholicism in a way that children can grasp, and the illustrations depict these deeper truths in a tangible way. This Catechism will be enjoyed by both children and parents and I highly recommend it for formation especially for preparation for reception of First Holy Communion.

This review is from: Saint Joseph First Communion Catechism (No. 0) (Paperback)
We found this book very easy to understand and it is written in simple language, therefore a 9 year old can easily understand the concepts. I like that at the end of each chapter, there is a list of questions, to make sure that the contents have been understood. I recommend this book to any parent that wants to emphazise certain concepts that might not be clear, after the child has gone to catechism lessons.

The New Saint Joseph First Communion Catechism is a great introduction to the Catholic Faith for those in first and second grade. This book covers all of the essentials that young minds need to know, such as the sacraments, the origin of sin, and the differences between mortal and venial sin, the nature of grace, and more. I highly recommend this book for all those who want to pass on their faith to their children

New Saint Joseph First Communion Catechism,
By A Customer
This review is from: Saint Joseph First Communion Catechism (No. 0) (Paperback)
I was dismayed that the "New" First Communion Catechism was published in 1963. Although some of the prayers and information is the same, the photos are obviously very dated, and the references to the "confession box" and "communion rail" won't do us any good in preparing our children for the sacraments. I am very disappointed.

The book is total heresy.,

The book is total heresy. The doctrines in this book have no biblical connection. The doctrines are man made by the Roman Catholic Church. I bought it to see what they teach. It truly is a shame that so many Catholics are deceived. They need to compare church doctrines to the BIBLE. Being a Catholic doesn't make you a Christian on your way to Heaven. Being BORN AGAIN IS THE ONLY WAY. Read John 3:16. Jesus said,"You must be born again to enter Heaven".
