Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

The 1997 Saint Joseph's Day Lecture, this study, by one of the greatest Biblical scholars of our time, focuses on the Biblical significance of the name "Joseph;" what ancient sources tell us about Joseph, the husband of Mary; and the picture of the saint which emerges in Matthew's Gospel. Fitzmyer's analysis reveals Joseph's special role in the Matthean infancy narrative. Matthew depicts Joseph of Nazareth as a son of Jacob, born to Davidic lineage, married to Mary, the virgin to whom Jesus Emmanuel is born through the working of the Holy Spirit, as well as a "righteous" Jew, solicitous for the woman to whom he has been engaged, and an obedient Jew, who listens to heaven's directives and in following them becomes the guardian of "the Child and His mother."

A world-renowned scholar in three related fields (the New Testament, Dead Sea Scrolls, and Aramaic language and texts), Fr. Fitzmyer is Professor Emeritus of Biblical Studies at The Catholic University of America and a former member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission.
