3.0 out of 5 stars Was expecting a real leather cover
Content is good, however the item description is misleading. It was advertised as Leather cover, but the actual cover was a budget faux leather.

The binding of the Bible is very sturdy imitation leather and the glossy box makes a great storage case. The text contains various full color pictures interwoven into it. A very useful, but incredibly inexpensive package. I don't think there is a better Bible for the price out there. I use it quite a bit and I am not even Catholic.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Most Faithful (pardon the pun!) Bible Ever!, November 9, 2003
By
W. M. Robbins "The Badger" (The Beautiful Blue Ridge) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Of the many changes and reforms that came about as a result of the Second Vatican Council, some of those that were most readily apparent to the Catholic Faithful were the order for Masses and the Liturgy to be conducted in the vernacular (the local language) rather than in Latin, and the increased emphasis placed on the reading and study of the Holy Scriptures. In carrying out these reforms, American Catholic scholars recognized the need for a new, more faithful translation of the Bible.

Previous Catholic Bibles had been based on the Latin Vulgate, written by St. Jerome. With the New American Bible, the translators went back to the original Hebrew and Greek writings to be as accurate to the meanings of the authors as is possible in a translation. The result is a marvelously faithful, clear, concise and, perhaps most importantly, unbiased translation that has been of immense value not just to Catholics, but to Christians of every denomination and non-Christian scholars as well.

A further advantage of the NAB is that the Liturgy of the Church, the traditional Catholic book of daily prayers, was revised and re-written to be based on the NAB. This means that scriptural passages contained in the Liturgy will appear the same as they do in your own Bible, facilitating personal Bible study.

Appreciation of the NAB's accuracy and easy language is not limited only to Christian study. The Bible is a primary source for knowledge of ancient history, especially when compared to the records of other cultures from the same period, and here the unbiased, faithful translation of ancient texts is most useful.

Whether a you are a Christian of any denomination, a student of ancient history, or a student of literature wishing to read the stories which so much of our western culture is based on, the New American Bible will be by far the most useful translation of the Bible for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent Bible!, October 11, 1999
This is a good Bible for Catholics and even non-Catholics. The translation itself (NAB) is solid and on the conservative side, although some of the wording seems a bit bland at times. The notes are also an important part of the text and provide lots of valuable information. The St. Joseph edition includes illustrations, a Bible dictionary, and the cycle of readings for Sunday Mass. The low price is another plus. I highly recommend this Bible.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great general purpose catholic bible, December 17, 1999
This review is from: Saint Joseph Medium Size Bible-NABRE (Paperback)
I can not add much to what has already been said. This is the Bible that the majority of "average" American Catholics are exposed to. This edition has all that anyone could want or need in a Bible. Attractive cover, plenty of intro's and explanatory notes. Handy size. Just an all around great general purpose Bible. If I could choose only one bible of all that are out there, this is the one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Pleased!, May 12, 2005
By
I am very pleased and surprised at the quality of this Bible for its price. It has nice color pictures as well as the Stations of the Cross and all 20 Mysteries of the Rosary. It has a nice brown leather-like cover, Sunday Mass reading list, and bible dictionary. Also a handy Doctrinal Bible Index.

I was used to always having a bible with the words of Christ in red, which this version does not have, but am liking it this way better. It is an 'easier on the eye' read , it flows better this way, for me anyways.

And the NAB is a fine translation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Modern, Scholarly Translation for All Faiths, November 28, 2005
By
Mark Lee (Woodruff, UT USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The New American Bible, while the official Roman Catholic translation, included non-Catholic scholars on the translation teams. This translation is a modern, fairly literal translation and includes the so-called Apocrypha (or Deuterocanonical books).

I grew up with the King James Version, and could never get through some parts of the Old Testament. The 400 year old English was just too difficult. The NAB uses modern English and the St. Joseph edition has excellent notes and study aids to help. Those sections that were most likely ancient poetry are set apart with different formatting, and there are sensible and appropriate subject divisions within the text.

In addition to being a fresh translation from the best available modern Greek and Hebrew sources, the NAB translation team also consulted various other biblical texts from the Dead Sea Scrolls and other recent finds. I'm unable to discern any religious "spinning" on the text. The reader is free to come to his or her own conclusions about what the text means.

The book itself is bound well and should bear up under many years of loving use. I also have a St. Joseph edition (vest pocket) of the New Testament for when I can't have a normal sized book like this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nicest NAB Bible, July 24, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is the nicest NAB Bible I've yet came across, and I've got several over the years. Firstly it does NOT have a leather cover, just plastic, but it seems well made and has a nice feel about it.

Also its not large print and on the box its called medium, which sums up the font and Bible size well. The font and layout is clear and the paper is thin 'Bible paper' but, its easy read.

As mentioned the Bible has a brown plastic cover and the pages have a orange coloured edge, which seems unusual, but I like it.

Lastly, theres a very nice section on the Stations of the Cross and Rosary, as well as (old-fashioned, but nice) pictures of OT and NT people and events throughout.

Overall I'm very pleased with this Bible and its great value for the price. I would go as far as to say: if your getting a NAB Bible get this one instead of any other one.

4.0 out of 5 stars LARGE PRINT IT A`INT, November 19, 2002
By
Phillips Butler (Clarks Green, Pennsylvania USA) - See all my reviews
I already have a medium sized Saint Joseph edition. When I saw LARGE PRINT that is what I wanted. While my eyesight is quite good I enjoy the large print format as it is easier on the orbs. I subscribe to the positive minded magazine GUIDEPOSTS which offers a LARGE PRINT edition and have purchased a number of large print offerings . So I was disappointed when the term large print simply meant exactly the identical medium sized edition I have sans the "leather "cover . I want my money back. Incidently the contents are excellent .

5.0 out of 5 stars New American Bible a Good Deal, March 9, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I recently purchased a leather bound New American Bible: St. Joseph Edition. I received my bible promptly, in good condition, and at a reasonable cost. It has a very flexible binding that makes it easy to use. The print is large enough to make it easy to read. The footnotes in the book are quite helpful. I am very pleased with my purchase.
