Editorial Reviews

(2-LP set) Saint Judas, Mark Growden's first studio album of original songs in eight years, is a gorgeously evocative set of 'Americana noir' that finally matches the legendary energy of Growden's live shows. His now-longtime backing band featuring guitarist Myles Boisen, acoustic bassist Seth Ford-Young, percussionist Jenya Chernoff, cellist Alex Kelly, and trumpeter Chris Grady provides an energetic complement to Growden's voice, accordion, banjo and baritone saxophone. Digging deep in harrowing personal tales of suffering and redemption, Growden emerges with his best recording yet.

I hate musical theater. I am obsessed with music, and not a big fan of theater, so that shouldn't be a surprise. Most music for musical theater is just there for the sake of being there. A few exploratory musicians incorporate theatricality into their music, though. The most prominent is probably Tom Waits, to whom Mark Growden is often compared. In the tradition of The Black Rider comes Mark Growden's Saint Judas. Growden's voice isn't the affected growl of Tom Waits, and he doesn't rely on junkyard percussion, but the theatricality is here, including unusual instrumentation like Growden's accordion, waltz time signatures and a preference for mood over melody. What distinguishes Saint Judas from the 1980's and onward work of Tom Waits in not just Growden's voice, but his tight arrangements of skilled instrumentalists like Myles Boisen (guitars) and Chris Grady (horns). Waits often employs skilled instrumentalists, but Growden's devotion to jazz traditions leads him to lean more heavily on his accompanists' improvisations. The result is what the music from musical theater would sound like in an alternative universe in which the music matters as much as the stage performance.

While that description might scare away some rock fans, there is plenty of edge here. Growden is far from a sentimentalist, and the sounds on Saint Judas are pretty dark. Even the waltz time signatures have the eerie edge of Tom Waits and his latter-day followers like Eric McFadden, and the jazz has a bawdy, burlesque sound that would fit right in in New Orleans. Growden draws from so many musical traditions that anyone with an open ear will find something to like.

This whole album is pretty amazing; Mark Growden's voice is so very, very sexy.
Track 6, "I'm Your Man", in particular, is a panty-dropper. It's so sultry.

Pretty good. A little more theatrical than I had thought it would be, but that was my misunderstanding. Still, good music and compelling lyrics.
